It's not open source. The open source definition is about more than being able to see source code. The usual term for the latter is "source-available" which tells you nothing about what you're actually able to do with it. Another term I use is "proprietary source available software" (PSAS) as a mirror to "free, open source software" (FOSS). Note that the "free" in that term refers to free softw...

Gotcha, do you happen to know any alternatives that are actually FOSS? I tried Urik keyboard but it doesn't hold up for FUTO keyboard in terms of swipe typing and multilingualism

There is HeliBoard, but swipe typing unfortunately requires Google's gesture typing library at the moment. There is work being done to create a foss replacement for the gesture typing library.

Not yet usable for a pure foss system, but it will be once the gesture library is ready.

I replaced FUTO with HeliBoard quite a while back. I'm contributing swipe data to help the effort with an open swipe library.

Overall the only feature I'm missing is changing to COLMAK.

I'm still trying to find something to replace Google Lens for image translation. Anyone got anything?

Trying out WebLibre browser right now and really like it. Based on Gecko engine. There's some unnecessary ~ "AI" ~ (opt-in) but a few features make it worth it.

  1. Real rules for tab containers. There's even automatic isolation and baked-in tor per container, and easy per URI rules
  2. Real plugins. ublock origin out of the box, even an option to force enable desktop Firefox plugins if you choose.
  3. Real PWA support. There's an option to force add sites as a PWA even if the site doesn't officially support it. On grapheneos it means I don't need NativeAlpha to make my tiny bank's site appear as a PWA.

Unexpected Keyboard and Thumb Key for two-hand and single-hand typing respectively. Qalculate! for calc.

I like Unexpected Keyboard, it's really intuitive once you get the hang of the swipe motions. I used to use Anysoft Keyboard but it became unusable with one of the more recent updates so I had to look for a new keyboard and found this one to my liking.

i didn't know TK had 2H layouts when i installed it years ago. i think they both have a lot of overlap in being feature-rich, with main differences (imo) being: Thumb Key has more 1H and 2H layouts, variations of layouts, and languages is a tiny bit more responsive with fewer mistypes for my thumbs, but YMMV can be further modified with YAML, which i haven't tried Flickboard uses long-press for...

Interesting, gotta check out Flickboard.

Btw, long-press for 0-9 can be enabled in Thumb Key with YAML like so:

Code
ENThumbKeySymbols:
  main:
    key0_0: { longPress: { text: "1" } }
    key0_1: { longPress: { text: "2" } }
    key0_2: { longPress: { text: "3" } }
    key1_0: { longPress: { text: "4" } }
    key1_1: { longPress: { text: "5" } }
    key1_2: { longPress: { text: "6" } }
    key2_0: { longPress: { text: "7" } }
    key2_1: { longPress: { text: "8" } }
    key2_2: { longPress: { text: "9" } }
    key3_0: { longPress: { text: "0" } }
  shifted:
    key0_0: { longPress: { text: "1" } }
    key0_1: { longPress: { text: "2" } }
    key0_2: { longPress: { text: "3" } }
    key1_0: { longPress: { text: "4" } }
    key1_1: { longPress: { text: "5" } }
    key1_2: { longPress: { text: "6" } }
    key2_0: { longPress: { text: "7" } }
    key2_1: { longPress: { text: "8" } }
    key2_2: { longPress: { text: "9" } }
    key3_0: { longPress: { text: "0" } }

There is a system in place (and accessible) to use custom layouts iirc.

Personally, yeah. To me, it's a matter of: It is not open-source, so if the FUTO company starts enshittifying it, then no one's going to fork it to undo that, because no one wants that proprietary license on their project, whether they intend to distribute it commercially or not. Obviously, I could just switch to a different keyboard app, if that happens, but in my experience, it also means tha...

Good point that the license matters when it comes to ability or willingness to fork by the community in the event of enshittification.
