Aside from the audiovisual experience, I think the main thing that makes going to the theater with friends fun is the post-movie discussion. You all experienced the same thing at the same time and can immediately reflect while it's fresh on your mind.

Most media is consumed asynchronously now and by the time you get to discuss it, you forget things and your emotions have dulled
