This made me think whatever happened to the Ultima series. I played some of the games growing up and now wondering whatever happened to the series since its been decades since anytbing. Apparently he sold the rights of the game to EA in like 1992... I can't really find out why they didnt really create anything, why buy the rights and do nothing? Theres some terrible browser and mobile game attempts done near 2010 but not very good. I do see Richard is looking to take back the rights of the game. Apparently theres some loophole where he can do so only after 35 years so next year he could possibly get that back and he wants to create something new finally. I hope he reflected these past 30 years and realized he would never do better than Ultima and thats ok.

Edit here is a link to the story about him trying to reclaim the rights next year. I also read some more and EA didnt care about the series once it had a flop and thinks it will not make money today because nobody cares. They shut Richard out multiple times and I think they didnt like him either.

Thanks! I am interested. I knew a few things but gaurentee I don't know a lot about it other than playing about half of the games while growing up.

If Garriott is involved in any way in a gaming project (with any game, not just Ultima), it's guaranteed to be trash.

Since at least 2010 or so he's been involved exclusively in trying to ride the hype; Desktop ~2010 era "Facebook games" (ala Farmville), sketchy crowdfunded MMO games, first crypto-coin scams aimed at gamers, then an NFT scam game.

Garriott is clearly not interested in making video games any more beyond promoting his "personal brand" and cashing in (without any concern on gameplay or clear legality, let alone ethics).

Somewhere in the Shroud of the Avatar subreddit (MMO with which Garriott wanted to focus on selling virtual land) you can find a post about someone working with Garriott on Tabula Rasa; the commentator claimed that Garriott was already done with gaming at that point; just going wild with the budget; spending it on strip clubs and getting a position for one of the dancers (not inherently a bad thing, but such things should be done with care).

One shouldn't believe everything they read online, but some of the references felt almost too specific for a random shitpost.
