I'd tack on Don't Look Up for another real depiction of how we got here. Film was scripted pre-covid and more an allegory on climate change, but it applied just the same.

Don't Look Up made me so fucking angry because I recognised all the problems presented in it.

Propaganda doesn't have to be convincing to be propaganda. When people are saying we live in Idiocracy, it's not a very far leap to say that we need policies in place to direct the growth of the human population. That idea is eugenics.

True, but it has to deliberately TRY to be convincing. Otherwise it's by definition not propaganda.

The fuck it isn't! 🤦🏻

To the people that only know eugenics as "the thing Nazis believed", then it is. The way neonazis onboard people is by asking questions such as "don't you think we should try to eliminate this horrible genetic disease?"

It's the same premise.

Edit: actually, I had forgotten. The pseudoscientist inventor of eugenics, Francis Galton, specifically sought to make the human population smarter.

Idiocracy is eugenicist propaganda. The rise of stupidity has nothing to do with genetics and everything to do with the deliberate dismantling of public education.

Idiocracy is more about what the world will be like when everyone is stupid not about how everyone becomes stupid.

For something to qualify as "eugenicist propaganda" it has to subtly advocate for eugenics. Idiocracy doesn't ever say anything like "dumb people shouldn't exist".

People who think Idiocracy is how evolution works are less-informed and more dangerous than creationists. The idea that society is collapsing because people are "breeding wrong" is historically competitive with any religion for getting innocent people slaughtered.

You're assuming that species evolve indefinitely. All fail eventually. There were lots of extinct creatures who lived with alligators and armadillos way back when. They either failed to adapt to change or were eliminated by an external force.

I think we have an evil external force working againt humanity, but I have no evidence for it and realize it sounds crazy.

Smart people are not reproducing right now unless there is a psycho involved or the woman has no choice.

It is literally the opening sequence. Well educated people focusing on their careers and having less children, whilst uneducated, unemployed people breed like rats. It's not even subtle, it has infographics. Surprised you missed it. Love the film, have issues with the premise.

Why could that not be social inheritance? I saw the intro before the last comment...

Again, I don't hear anything about genetics. It seems like you are the one who believe that stupid is bred.

my brother in christ have you even watched the fucking movie? it doesn't even try to pretend it's not about the "wrong people" having too many kids, it has scenes explicitly dedicated to showing that. whether they intended it that way or not, that's the movie that got made.

I think so many films and books describe the rise of fascism and authoritarianism because it's inevitable in a capitalistic society.

Nothing magically appears. It all starts somewhere and grows.

The signs have been there for a very long time.

I've quite honestly found Dr Strangelove to be kind of comforting these last couple of months. If you've never seen it it's worth a watch.

I love the serious thriller take on the same book, the film Fail-Safe (1964). Directed by Sidney Lumet, starring Henry Fonda. No idea why this film isn't better known, if only from being compared to Dr Strangelove.

Same here, not funny at all.

I imagine people couldn't laugh at Dr Strangelove when they were terrified of actual nuclear war, either.

I watched it for the first time last night. If I didn't recognize some of the actors, you could have convinced me that it was made this decade

The purpose of a thing is what it does

The purpose of a system is what it does. This is based on the observation that systems can be changed by those with the power if what it is doing is unsatisfactory to those with the power.

That doesn't apply to all things. The purpose of my cat wasn't to puke on my carpet. That was just something I unfortunately had to deal with.

I don't think there is any other movie that is as pro eugenics. I see where they are coming from but also I don't think that's how intelligence and geans work. This was discussed as a possibility in the early 1900s however I think it was more the crime gean or the unemployment gean. Both where discredited.

Canadian Bacon is the true documentary, the US can't handle being not at war.
