Right, this is what drives me up a fucking wall about the horseshoe types. I hear people talking about how I should think it’s a good thing that turnip opened up nuclear energy again. But his incompetence and grift will ensure it lives up to all the worst public fears about it. It’s going to set back nuclear progress immeasurably. Probably the point of this kakistoctacy though, keep the oil prices up…
Why do you think he went to war with Iran? US oil companies sure aren't complaining right now. THey need over 62$ a barrel to break even. Before the war it was like 70$ish a barrel. Barely making a profit. As for nuclear progress the US won't be a leader in that going forward. It hasn't even moved past uranium steam reactors. China is out here building Thorium Molten Salt reactors. They even have plans to put one in a cargo ship. Combined with their solar and wind production they're the only hope humanity has to stop climate change. |

How can you call it cheap when we’re discussing a specific project that ran out of money? I can’t think of a more hard and fast example of something being “not cheap.” I’m not supporting any particular alternative technology or narrative, so I dunno what your point is about batteries. Those aren’t even an electrical production method so IDK how it relates at all. What I’m saying is, it is strai...
We're discussing that? I thought the thread was about the article from ars and you bringing up your comment as an apropos to the article, but youre telling us its the other way around? Hm, weird |

I live near an abandoned nuclear plant: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WNP-3_and_WNP-5 It was too expensive to get started. I think about this often when people tell me nuclear is cheap.

Source on storage that has historically been horrible? Our storage facilities are pretty simple. Just a salt mine in the desert. My source on nuclear getting cheaper to build is that many, many companies are choosing to plan on-site nuclear plants rather than other options, and Eastern countries building it cheaper year over year. In the West, nuclear cost per kWH has dropped significantly over...
Where is the final depleted uranium storage facility in the United States? Source on horrible storage: Salt water inside isn't good. Estimated costs are in the billions and paid by the tax payers and not the company responsible for it. Source on kWh prices for nuclear? "Flamanville 3, under construction in 2010, had an initial estimated cost in 2007 of €3.3 billion. By the time the reactor went online in 2024, the final cost had risen to an estimate €13.2 billion" Hinkey point is currently being built and has a minimum price per kWh of 15 cents. Even the worst priced private solar offer over here will be closer to 10 and a good one with storage at 6. For commercial it's closer to 3. Including storage at commercial capacity is around 10. https://www.iwr.de/news/britisches-atomkraftwerk-hinkley-point-c-verzoegert-sich-weiter-und-wird-teurer-atomstrom-kostet-mindestens-15-cent-pro-kilowattstunde-news39541 |

There isn't any salt water if it's in a salt mine above the water table in seismically inactive rock. The one I'm referring to is WIPP in the US. This is just one source for kWH prices: https://www.statista.com/statistics/184754/cost-of-nuclear-electricity-production-in-the-us-since-2000/. Search it, and there are many, many more. A little basic, 15 second research could get you 90% of the way there, instead of having me pull it for you. Individual mismanaged Western plants are not indicative of the trends of the industry as a whole. You can always find a standout poor example. Again, energy storage is not there yet. We physically cannot replace all fossil fuel reliance with purely renewables yet. It will happen, but not for some time. Price per kWH does not tell the full story of reliability over time. |
