Why would anyone who wasn't delusionally idealistic want to provide that service? Do you really want to spend hours of your life per day trying to prevent people from spamming their insane propaganda to your instance and endlessly being harassed and doxxed by internet strangers because you blocked them from posting pedophilia and other illegal and violent content? Self hosting is great for a sm...

you have a point BUT this (Activity Pub) should be the basis for national governments to host, instead they use X, Whatsapp , Facebook and then bitch when the short arm of US political and billionare interference revahes in and pinchs their taint.

Mastodon and Lemmy can easily be done that way and be an official channels for governments to use and encourage their citizens and self hosters can as well

If we all spun up our own personal services, there would just be that many more shutting down. I love the fediverse but the whole "there's so many TLDs, you have to use a third party link service that you need to share links through and that the person clicking the links needs to configure on their end before it will forward them to a link where they're still logged in and can see the content" ...

Wait there's a specialized threadiverse link sharing service? Tell me more, I've been getting really frustrated at how embeds are a gamble every post I share

Is self hosting a problem for Lemmy? Yes and no. Self hosting for personal or small groups is a great feature. It allows communities to be independently responsible and has a relatively low barrier to entry. I think Lemmy needs to have a certification process though. People not looking to self-hosting should be guided to instances that have documented availability, backup, recovery, and backend...

only some clever p2p shinnanigans can save us now

and lemmy.world :)

There's more than one, all the better to make the process more convoluted for both the poster and viewer. This is the only one I use. You share via this service, the person clicking the link has to configure the service for their instance they are on and then they'll see the links configured for their instance.

The Nvidia guy?

checks Wikipedia

He got his grad degree at Stanford in 2010, and I bet that he probably donated a bunch of money to the university, probably paid for the thing's construction. My experience is that it's not uncommon for people who make it big out of tech universities to donate money to their alma mater, and the university often names something after them.

Jensen Huang and his wife Lori helped fund Stanford’s engineering centre with their $30 million donation. The university dedicated the Jen-Hsun Huang Engineering Center as a shared space for research, education and collaboration across disciplines.

The building houses more than 270 faculty members, staff and students, along with workshops for building prototypes and models.

The centre was established as part of Stanford’s Science and Engineering Quad, providing a shared space for students and researchers working across engineering, science and medicine. Huang, the co-founder and chief executive of Nvidia, received his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford in 1992.

I'd guess that Nvidia itself might also have donated money:

The building features the 300-seat NVIDIA Auditorium and the Frederick Emmons Terman Engineering Library. The library was designed to support collaboration and help students and faculty access both digital and print research materials.

Yes, I'm well aware that's how it works.
