Local election officials across California are confused and frustrated after receiving letters from President Donald Trump’s Justice Department demanding that county registrars sequester ballots that the federal government believes were sent to noncitizen voters ahead of the midterm elections.

The letters, which were sent on Friday, ask for sensitive information, including Social Security numbers, on roughly 20,000 voters. It is illegal for noncitizens to register to vote or cast a ballot. The administration has insisted that immigrants voting is a major problem nationwide, when in fact it is quite rare, as even its own investigations have shown.

“All of this is simply meant to raise huge doubts about the integrity of this election,” said John Tuteur, the registrar of voters for Napa County in California’s wine country.

However, the California attorney general’s office said the letters contained errors. For example, Mendocino County officials received a list of people who were not residents there, according to the state’s court filing.

It seems clear to me that DOGE stole all sorts of data that it shouldn't have access to, fed it all to Grok, and now it is generating all these "lists" full of AI hallucinations. (Or, they could have asked Grok some leading questions, like "I know there are loads of non-citizens here, go find as many as you can".)

If Democrats really do manage to gain some power back, they need to do an immediate investigation regarding exactly how these "lists" were generated. If they can demonstrate that they were not entirely accurate, then there ought to be consequences, at least in a functioning Democracy.

Democrats are not in power to do anything. You can thank the electorate or Trump’s cheating for that.

California should invite the DoJ to name any fraudulent voters they discover, point to the history of fraudulent voting (less than one percent, and so far ALWAYS conservative white-guy citizens doing it), and invite the DoJ to prosecute these Schrodinger criminals to the same negligent extent.

The letters are the latest escalation in a legal battle between Democratic-dominated California and Trump’s Department of Justice ahead of the midterms. The federal government sued on Oct. 15, roughly three weeks before elections, asking a judge to bar the state from counting mail-in ballots from people the federal government has identified as likely noncitizens. A panel of 9th Circuit appeals court judges will hear arguments on Sunday about whether California can be compelled to comply with the federal government’s demands.

Wait until the last minute? Why not arrange and plan this all out well ahead of time?

I'm sure you already know this, but some people sue to address a wrong or to correct and injustice. Others sue just to harass and create chaos, and don't give a shit about the outcome because the more confusion it creates, the better: the suit IS the goal.

This is that second kind of lawsuit. They already know there is negligible non-citizen voting, and when it does happen it is usually the result of confusion and ignorance, not a deliberate intent to vote without the legal right to do so.

This lawsuit has nothing to do with any real problem and everything to do with creating instability in the electoral process itself.

And I would bet it was planned and arranged ahead of time: the timing is part of the effectiveness, if your actual goal is to disrupt voting in a state like California where you already know you are going to lose.

We will likely see more of these frivolous and disruptive DoJ lawsuits not only in the days leading up to the election, but another flurry afterward in every state and race where the orange chancre loses.
