What if moderators were assigned by post instead of community?

Easier for the user. In both cases. It's easier to handle a bad moderator because going to or creating a new post is easier than going to or creating a new community (because you don't have to abandon all the members). It's easier to moderate because there are more moderators. Each post is moderated by its creator.

Who is this "user" you're talking about? Near every choice in a social media platform design is an engineering choice between conflicting priorities.

The troll who wants to post garbage finds it easier, but the earnest poster now needs to filter out trolls on their own.

The person wanting to co-opt a community label finds it easier, but the person who wants it to continue as-used now has no recourse.

The pervert wanting to upload PG boob-shots definitely finds self-moderation easier, but your change would force rape victims with PTSD to let that smut into their already-curated set of communities.

If you wanted to add a new layer of moderation for posters beneath instance owners and community moderators that might be plausible, but "OP posted something dumb and is getting piled on" is a it's own force your suggestion would abandon.

(And if you think just adding more random part-time moderators to a community would improve its moderation I would encourage to try
Improving your next family dinner by giving orders in the kitchen. Especially one that you didn't plan.)

I am referring to the average user.

This would replace communities. We wouldn't have communities. We'd have posts and tags. For example, instead of "ask lemmy" community we'd tag our post with "ask lemmy" tag. And, optionally, any other topic-related tags one deems appropriate (thus cross-posting).

Trolls would be handled in the obvious way. Votes, tags, lists, account age, keywords, blocking , reporting etc.

I haven't bought into the paranoia yet.

Well, then for education, here's what happens to any place without censorship.

Normal people are interacting happily. Some assholes come by and start being assholes without anyone stopping them. More assholes join because this is a great place for assholes. Normal people start getting annoyed with the great number of assholes and leave. It's now a place for assholes.

For "asshole" fill in nazi, pedophile, manospherian, etc.

Moderated communities allow topics to stay on track and fit the theme of a community. Consistent community themes don't interest me. Good conversations do. I think this is a common preference. It allows you to find different comms if you don’t agree with how one is being run. My system would achieve the same, but easier. My system would achieve the same, but easier. Because it's easier to post or go to a different post than to go to a different community or create your own community. Also, with tags, you would avoid the problems with having multiple places to post the same topic. Also crossposting (when your post covers multiple topics) would be easier.

I don't see how such a risk would necessarily arise. And if it did, because switching to a different conversation (and moderator) is so easy, you'd just do so.

What stops me from tagging something "Star Trek," and then in the body of the post, pasting a link to some scam site selling dick pills, or creating dozens of bot accounts to do the same with every variation of tag? Nobody can stop me if I'm the only one who can moderate my posts.

You mention that its "easy to switch to another post" but fail to mention how that would work in practice. Currently, you can find a similar post inside a dedicated community easily, but without a community to sort post topics, how are posts displayed? Chronologically? By upvotes? By recent activity?

It sounds like you're just describing a feed like Facebook or Twitter. The former being nearly impossible to find specific posts on. Instead, you either need Groups (same as communities) or to rely on the algorithm. Also imagine either of those sites without moderation.

Anyone who moderates an online community is either a saint or gluten for punishment.

We need them and anyione who steps up to do it is a hero to me.

I don't think that's a good parallel. There is no crook or trial here.

Just wanted to stick up for that guy's analogy. It's perfect, actually.

The point of an analogy is to compare one situation to another situation in such a way that they have a common thread, a common axis. The point isn't for both situations to be the exact same.

I prefer my mods gluten-free.
