Hytale has been out for almost 10 hours now! What does everyone think of the game so far?

My thoughts:

  • Surprisingly polished and stable, even on Linux. I expected way worse - but it doesn't seem as early as I thought it was.
  • Love how many building options there are, the block workbench allowing you to turn most blocks into cut versions of it is awesome. Roof tiles are very cool as well.
  • Combat seems way too easy, at least in the first two zones. It seems you can just 100% block any damage source without consequence. It felt weird that I could just tank a polar bear then attack it whenever it's not attacking. Definitely something the team can work on.
  • I'm excited for world generation v2 that the devs talked about, since the current map is a bit too flat and predictable.
  • Having a map is nice but some people pointed out that it shows you WAY too much of the world around you, kind of making exploration unnecessary considering you can just open the map and see all the biomes around you.

I have not updated my MacBook to os 26 yet so I was unable to play today. I doubt I will before the weekend so I will try to install on my Steam deck tomorrow.

I've enjoyed it so far, I'd just like to be able to stop mobs from spawning in places I take over! I found a cool set of ruins that I took over and starting settling in, but the skeletons keep respawning in it.

I don't mind the map size, it actually helps me decide where I want to go explore since I can see where structures might be as opposed to feeling like I'm just picking a random direction and hoping for the best.

I played around with it today for a few hours. There wasn't anything really wrong with it. I had one issue with some kind of invisible block but that wasn't a big deal.

I just didn't like it and I can't put my finger on why. It seems like a perfectly serviceable game. At the end of the day I'm just not itching to play more and I'm disappointed.

FWIW a lot of what you need in crafting comes from mobs, so it's good to take down a few to get materials for later whenever you're exploring or building.

Hytale blends the freedom of a sandbox with the momentum of an RPG

So far the emphasis is sandbox for sure. The only RPG element has been go to the temple and unlock memories.

I expected skills, leveling, and progression through doing not Minecraft gathering progression. Which all the game appears to be is a Minecraft clone.

It is not bad, other than taking damage for sleeping too long, it just is not what I thought it would be.

It's more of a Terraria/Valheim style progression system, where you need to upgrade crafting benches and work more on getting materials through adventuring than just digging down and finding diamonds. I don't think it was ever planned to have skills & levelling, but I've heard that some people are already working on mods for this type of stuff.
