I've seen some links posted to sites that somehow manage to show comment history even for accounts with it hidden as well. Apparently the feature is pretty half baked.

I have noticed more personality posts stuff like relationship dramas but the phrasing in them is odd.

Also a few more agitators…they are quick to be in and quite snarky. Maybe it was always there and I didn’t notice it.

Some of the bots, on the other hand, are very easily distinguishable from humans. The one who's profile I checked out was posting well-polished exactly bot-like political memes for the past few months at a rate that would be a full-time job for an unassisted human.

That rendering process better be thorough - prions survive in the soil. Edit: hydrofluric acid probably isn't very good for the soil either.

Would prions survive the acid?

One can get banned for that, as well as the fact that you're once again uploading info that might possibly be used against you in future. Even the Fediverse tracks its accounts as I understand it and makes one's history semi-permanent.

The only true alternative I know is to take part in an accountless system or one which is heavily anonymized, like the 'Chan' stuff or whatever. For me it's just far easier to tread lightly, and avoid certain topics.

EDIT: Downvote away, but give me a rebuttal if you can.

There is a bot that posts nothing but links to reddit threads. I could block it or bots in general but then I won't be able to downvote the posts it makes. It moderates the communities it posts to so reporting it would do fuck all.

AFAIK that whole instance is nothing but Reddit repost communities and ought to just be defederated.

you could make a bot that downvotes their posts and still block them.

only way to stop a bad bot with a bot is a good bot with a bot.

I'm not really surprised, in a lot of ways Lemmy and its fediverse is even more susceptible, although you don't need bots when a lot of people are as braindead as many of them, you just need to filter out susceptible users into cults-on-demand and brainwash them into acting like them.

The only true alternative is to just have more alts, one for specific interests where each each individual one is not enough to ban you. Platforms that clearly have thrived off of them should facilitate people using them instead of using it as an excuse to ban people when they want to.

It also doesn't help when those platforms are deliberately trying to harvest as much personal data they can off of their users and often have engagement bait posts to get their users to get them to identify increasingly personal data about themselves that is otherwise nothing anyone would care about.

I'm not sure how they do it exactly, but Reddit is evidently really good at detecting alts. Not necessarily by IP# or common information across accounts, but by... well I don't know, some deep algorithms or something?

Reddit still has use to me, and there are one or two communities in which I have roots and a relationship with the mods, etc. I'd really rather not mess around with that or risk getting in to an 'account war' with Reddit over alts. At least at this time...

As someone who has gotten banned by the admins for stupid reasons that should have been overturned but weren't.......... Having a new account is a pain in the ass for a couple of months and/or until you build up karma.

It's stupidly painful.

They also use browser fingerprinting, session information, and geolocation, powered by generative AI. IP can easily be cycled in most ISPs, so they'd end up hurting themselves if they just used that.

Shoot... some of that stuff I should be able to block via my U-matrix extension. Would just need to play around with the javascripts, I guess.

Basically all comment history is hidden. Very popular with totally organic pro Maga accounts.

I've seen several accounts here on Lemmy that go to an error page when you click on the name on their post. I always report them to the admins and never see them again. Never heard back from anyone what's going on. I've developed a habit of checking the profiles of posts that just seem off.

Reddit used to get flooded with bots before elections. By 2024, they were just around all the time. I got permabanned after that, but it's probably even worse by now.

I’ve seen some questionable activity and accounts talking exclusively about Iran. That was on Reddit though. Not here.

Fedi, tracking accounts? What do you mean by "tracking"?

Semi-permanent, yeah, I'll give you that one. That said, if you delete something, generally it's actually deleted. Any servers which turn out to be ignoring delete requests tend to get cut off from everyone else pretty quickly. I guess there's always the possibility your "hey this post was deleted" notification might not bubble through to a given server, but it should work.

its easier to block them here then on reddit, where ever 1 bot is replaced by hundreds. its impossible, and i also heard that if you block over 1000+ they dont actually mute thier comments anymore.

Some people block political threads, so all that's left are those that don't block them... which tends to be people who strongly believe in their opinions or want to use it as a soapbox to rant... so there's rarely any just "chill" opinions or nuanced takes. literally everyone is slightly autistic. that is a useless classification. it's like saying have to eat food or you have to poop. so does litereally every other person who ever existed... it's not a distinguishing aspect of any one person over another. when you self-diagnose you are doing nothing more than taking a horoscope. i bet you are a 'little bit of a Pisces'. too.

Everyone has most traits of most mental health issues to some extent. Its not a useless classification though. Classic example is everyone pees but if youre doing it 40 times a day its probably time for the doctors.

Yes, I think you explained it well. I'd not stated it very precisely, and I do feel like this is a low-risk platform at the moment.

Still, there's always the potential risk that whatever is posted & commented here can be tracked and recorded in to a permanent record of sorts. And that AI / other tools could possibly be used to collect such info and profile people. Things are changing fast, so I deem it best to be cautious, with an eye on the future.

I'm skeptical. I just think there is a higher percentage of people who use that label to justify their persecution complexes, which justify their anger/rage that they direct towards others. I bet you the vast majority of people who rail about 'normies' are themselves, are very much normies themselves. even IRL I have seen a huge uptick the past few years of people, in casual conversation, self-...

There are a lot of people out there, so many things can be true at once.

I think it's inevitable that some people use labels as excuses just because awareness of those conditions is so much higher. I also think it's inevitable that there are a lot of people who struggled all their life with things that are difficult to diagnose or weren't on the minds of parents and teachers 30 years ago.

And there's probably no way to ever say definitively, with evidence, either way on this -- but it would blow my fucking mind to find out that Lemmy didn't have a neurospicy percentage of participants significantly higher than the general population.

And even if that were known to be untrue, I think Lemmy also attracts people who are more aware, open, and accepting of that stuff in themselves and others.

You're not missing anything. Reddit is the embodiment of Empty Internet Theory. If you're a human posting on that site, you're a statistical anomaly. And not for long, because everyone's getting booted.

The big and medium communities are lost. Small niche communities still have some good followings and timely content.

Lol nah, I just crosspost .ml (see below) and it's all done by human hands, I'm just hooked into the RSS feed to deliver notifications to my phone + a good workflow

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?

I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitilize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don't want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.

Megathread on the issue

Some highlights from the link:

.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558
The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068

"If you don't support Russia then you just don't understand geopolitics" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415

"Don't worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167

"See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn't count!!" ~ Davel, .ml admin
https://lemmy.world/post/30673342

"NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!" ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035

General negative sentiment to other instances who haven't "seen the way" yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510

And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can't even put them all here because this comment would be really long.

I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda

On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like "Lemmy? Isn't that the place with a bunch of tankies?" Or "Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left". The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

I recently got Permabanned from Reddit because I reshared the Alex Pretti video back when that was happening. They also banned every other account for every person in my household because of their fingerprinting service going overboard. Fuck Reddit.
