Just played through Crisol.
Gorgeous game. Gothic Spanish style.
$17 on steam right now.

Play it in native Spanish. The English dub is terrible.

Mix between silent hill. Resident evil village.

Mostly puzzles and traversing areas. Light combat action.

Has a really unique combat mechanic.
Your amo is made from your blood.

Also it's Eldritch horror.
That caught me by surprise and was unexpected based on the trailers I saw.

Took me like 13 hrs to play.

Not a perfect game but def worth $17.

Story could have been developed more but no apparent plot holes.

Probably budget was a limiting factor there.

That's fair, it is slow and often clunky. I am personally totally fine with the pace of it, but I get why it wouldn't be for everyone. To me, the ship navigation stuff was there to make the setting feel bigger and lend weight to the plot rather than the puzzles. I personally enjoyed stopping off at unexpected things I found along the way, or figuring out how to get to some of the less-accessibl...

Edit: possibly relevant, apparently the game had some pretty bad bugs with the navigations on launch. I played it after those got patched, so my experience may have been different to yours

Unfortunately not the issue, I didn't play it early after release, and tried playing multiple times over the years. The ship navigation alone isn't too bad, but it can absolutely get tedious, and I feel like the game acknowledges it by giving you the option to skip it after some time... But you're not in control of when that option to skip appears, and when the game dripfeeds you dialogue instead.

It mostly feels like good ideas that just don't work well together for me, or are ruined by a few decisions that I find annoying, like slow animations everywhere.

Are those non-US studios going to release the assets and source code⸮

If that's your prerogative, you should stick to open source games rather than indie studios.

  • Blasphemous 1 and 2
  • STALKER

  • Commandos
  • Tzar
  • Imperivm
  • Tropico 3

You realize not everyone in the US supports the bullshit taking place, right?

Why is that important?

As someone who has lived in the US for several years (and who still talks to close friends from there), I think it is reasonable to make an assumption that in the next ~20-30 years there won't any change with respect to support for (and dominance of) crime, corruption, authoritarianism and demagoguery in the US.

Yhe US centre right party leadership is too corrupt, but also have no experience (or even theoretical interest) with anti-corruption/crime reforms. The party base is too well off (by relative global standards) to ever risk rocking the boat and getting serious about crime, not to mention a non-minuscule percentage of the US centre right voting base (similar to a large proportion of the far right), look up to criminals and oppose improvements to governance.

In that context, it is reasonable to drop US purchases whenever possible.

Why wouldn't that be important? You're punishing people who have absolutely nothing to do with, and actively oppose, the things you're talking about, while the people responsible are completely unaffected.

I wish them luck (I genuinely do), but the existence of such people doesn't change that the US will almost certainly remain commited to crime, corruption, chauvinism and demagoguery in the coming decades.

From my experience this is not purely a US far right issue. As I mentioned in my reply, much of the centre right might oppose the current administration, but they are still opposed to anti-crime reform (if not supporting crime out-right).

It sounds like you genuinely wish them the opposite, since you're encouraging others to boycott their businesses for the crime of existing in America.

That's a mischaracterization. Trust me, it brings me no joy to see the US become a chauvinist, criminal oligarch regime. It's a disaster to be honest.

That being said, you do not want to send money to a regime that wishes you harm and is composed of criminals. Nor is it unreasonable to make an assumption that the dominance of criminal elements is permanent and American civil service will get permanently debased and hollowed out.

Mind you, this sort of outcome is not surprising and a foreigner living in the US could notice the foundations of such an outcome a decade before Trump.

That's simply not true!

You suggested that people should boycott all American companies because of their government. I don't know how I'm supposed to interpret that any other way.

Correct.

That's not the same thing as what you are claiming (that I wish bad things for those Americans who oppose the current regime).

Replace "those who oppose the current regime" with "all Americans" and it's exactly the same thing.

Vintage Stories has its own launcher and also native Linux build. Its a more slow progress and survival focused voxel game and I find it immensely satisfying playing with friends. Many tool crafting mechanics are very similar to real life, also food making has debth, there's crop rotation and just so many little things. It was founded by the Austrians and the company sits in Latvia. It has a ve...

Ugh, game looks pretty good but I can't stand that visual style anymore. I'm very appreciative of games that use voxels for environmental destruction capabilities but that smooth them out instead of everything looking like it's made of giant pixels, like Enshrouded.

This one looks a lot better than minecraft for the environment (at least based on the trailer, not sure if they just used camera angles that hide the blocky look), but I was disappointed as soon as I saw the enemies/player characters.

No hate or judgement if you are into that, it's just annoying when something sounds like exactly what I'm into but then features a pet peeve, especially when it's something so central as the overall visual design.

Other threads have mentioned this game has a healthy mod community, any mods for making it look not like minecraft?

We are in a gaming community, talking about access to games. The only way to actually liberate games is to publish sources liberally. This includes enforcing hard copyleft licensing.

that's a herculean task. devs and artists already suffer from low wages and overwork. And making games is quite labour intensive.

you can publish sources and potentially struggle to make enough money. interesting games are dime a dozen, even rarer in indie scenes that also make it open source.

solve this and we can agree it's the ONLY way. Until then you gotta pay for binaries.

Owlcat Games - they made two Pathfinder games, Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous, some of my favorite CRPGs in recent memory. Their latest, Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, is supposed to be great as well, but I haven't had the time to do more than check out the character creation so far.

Interesting question, here are some EU-made indie games I've enjoyed, in no particular order. I had to look all of these up, I didn't play them because they were European or anything. Baba Is You (Finland) [e: forgot] Chants of Senaar (France) Dead Cells (France) Disco Elysium (Estonia) Drova (Germany) Monster Train (Netherlands) Roadwarden (Poland)

Oh! A friend of mine (that I haven't seen for quite a while) is a Drova dev! Never expected to see it listed here. I'm super happy

I haven't heard, what did they do?

Long story short, Motion Twin gave the game to Evil Empire around 2019 (iirc) to handle its development, so they are the ones who made every update and expansion from the first dlc onwards.

After like 5 years of DC being developed by EE they released the "the end is near" update, but said that it was not the last update and that they were working on more stuff, including wrapping up the story.

Then Motion Twin announced a new game, and shortly after they cancelled any work in DC. The goodbye posts included some shutouts to the new game, so the cancellation of DC was seen as trying to kill any competition to their new game. One ex-dev said that MT were being a bunch of dicks to EE and claimed that the cancellation was indeed to give more attention to the new game.

I don't think ID software is exactly making all their stuff open source. The original doom source code was only released after it was already a successful game and franchise was established.

regardless you should actually talk to people who do the majority of the slog work in gamedev whether their salaries match their needs for the month.

you should also consider speaking to indie devs that struggle to make a living as the example of successful indie games to failed ones is miniscule.

Theory is all well and good. Maybe you should get out of your library and look at ground realities? Solving it is everybody's effort. Suggest practical ways to survive first. Then speak about changing the situation.
