In the US, its purpose was to ensure freed slaves have US citizenship, and in Canada, it was to unite Canada's diverse, existing population under a distinct identity from the British. Those conditions are loooong gone. Lawmakers at the time didn't imagine that - one day - we'd have an actual industry called "birth tourism".
Anyone who has any friends from the global south knows how frequently and how flagrantly people take advantage of this privilege these days to give birth to US/Canadian babies. Even they think it's ridiculous that this "loophole" even exists here.
I'm not even saying you should get rid of it, but at least amend it to require kids born here to reside here so many days each year after a certain age. It is batshit insane that we can't amend shit laws like this without some outrageous process that requires 2 trillion dollars and 25 years of legal challenges.
But, of course, Trump chose the most boomer-retarded way to tackle this issue that will all-but-certainly ensure no one will ever touch it again.
"We all agree right guys? RIGHT?!" 🤡
The 🐷 trying to get rid of fairly explicit rights in the Constitution without even bothering to pass an amendment is a much bigger threat than the anchor babies. We should fix the conditions that encourage mass immigration instead.
