I think we call this a “stitch” in the UK

Nah, a stitch is side cramp when doing exercise

The first time it happened to me I was sleeping and the pain woke me up. I drank some whiskey and went back to bed to try to die in my sleep. Unfortunately I did not die peacefully.

Before this comment, I thought my anecdote of "I had this a few years ago and decided to just let whatever it was kill me" was too bleak to post

Does anyone know the name for the sensation where you stretch and suddenly your innards feel all wrong, almost like being on the verge of a cramp but not and you suspect that if you don't return relatively quickly but gently to an unstretched position that something may go badly wrong inside?

Ahh, this is fun. Every time I'm like "Is this it? Is this the one?" But no, it never is.

But no, it never is.

I'd take this over proctalgia.

It's a spasm of the anal sphincter and it feels like someone jamming a hot knife into your asshole without warning.

I've had this since before I was a teenager...decades ago. Still happens from time to time. I've always considered it somewhat like a cramp in my diaphragm and so always breathe just deeply enough that it starts to hurt then relax and next breath try a bit deeper and keep that up until I "work through it."

Me, too. Used to have it quite often. GP said it comes from bad posture. So I changed that, and also started working out more. It went away for good.

I think for me it had to do with bad mental health

Yeah it's not fun. Also I'd heard about exploding head syndrome a few years back and then recently started experiencing it. I'm just glad they haven't both hit at the same time cause I'm pretty sure my body would take a screenshot then drop dead lmao

Well thanks for sharing this. I've been getting this since forever. Now that I think about it though I don't think it's happened in a while.

Anyway, much appreciated!

At the point of full expansion, it can feel like a rubber band snap in the chest,

🤮

I often struggle with arythmia, angina, and palpitations, with up to several seconds between beats sometimes, and this sounds horrific. I'd rather double my heart problems than trade them for this

Huh. I always thought this was part of my asthma since exercise-induced asthma is a thing and I usually get this after an intense cardio-heavy session.

I wonder if it's genetic, or just very common. All five of my siblings and I have had this.

I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but I have a condition where sometimes my chest hurts because of a bone in a strange place. I've been to the hospital a few times thinking I might have heart problems. Then I get prescribed painkillers.

As I got older those random pains have me worried "is this a cardiac event?!" despite showing no other symptoms for one.

Next time you have chest pain, take a couple of aspirin. That actually helps, you can drink whiskey too if you Watts but I do not think it helps much.

Isn't alcohol and aspirin pretty bad? Maybe in thinking of something else. Anyway, read the medicine bottle first.

Samesies. I popped a rib out a while back and now I seem to have recurring bouts of costochondritis right over my heart where that rib attaches to my sternum. Definitely thought I was dying for a bit.

I have one where my lung diaphragm gets pinched between my lung and ribs, it's really not fun, and you have to bend backwards + inhale before it gets better

If you're able to access primary care they may be able to bill your insurance for an EKG yearly. Wouldn't catch everything but might notice if you pick up some a-fib or another lowkey issue that might snowball (although the main issue with afib is usually clots and afib clots usually hit the brain not the heart iirc).

Do it if you can. Afib is one of those things that can take years to diagnose, with most people thinking they're just unfit. Meanwhile, half their heart isn't working properly ...

Thanks for this revelation. It has a name! All my siblings got these and they told me "it's a gas in your lung" which i ran with for years, haha.
Once, still as a kid, i got it for 6 hours so we called a doctor. She diagnosed it as intercostal neuritis triggered by high and unusual physical excertion the previous day. Prescribed nothing

No, but I'd guess you have some scar tissue or a twist or something and to take those feelings seriously.

The best way to get rid of it when it happens is to fill your lungs as much as you can, and then bear down lightly like you are pooping. After that it’s gone. Happens to me about 3x/yr and always has.

Does the turtle have to peek it's head out?

Know anything about a kinda dull pain in the sternum that comes and goes, which lasts a week or month, then is gone for a few weeks or months before it comes back. Has been going on for a few years at this point. Got all kinds of scans and tests done the first year but everything showed normal. I at least don't think I'm gonna die anymore but it sucks.

Pleurisy, costochondritis, gerd, or referred pain from radiculopathy, maybe. Especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle or back trauma

I get these, I thought it was the front and back of my lung touching and behaving like universal velcro, which explained why breathing in hurt, but also why taking a full breath made it go away (fully separated.) I guess not?

For me, the way to deal with this was to raise my arms above my head in a stretch. Made it stop every time. Thought I was having a heart attack the first couple of times it happened. As an adult, I still have them from time to time, but not anywhere as frequently, though still without any warning.

mine was sleeping on my back lying still, it alleviates it. also it was triggered by doing certain exercises, but that seems to help alleviate eventually. one time it lasted alot longer than usual

Holy shiit that has a name?! Every once in a blue moon, I'll be just sitting minding my own business then BAM! Ass lightning like Thor stabbed me in the ass with a blade that has lightning wrapped around it. Then just as suddenly as it came, it's gone...

I've called it ass lightning for the past few years. At least I know I'm not alone!

I can also sometimes get it to snap by putting my left foream against a doorframe and twisting my torso rightward to stretch my chest. I've always thought it was "popping my sternum" but it only works/is necessary on the left side

Aspirin thins the blood, and as such helps heart attack victims, stroke victims, and also helps preserve organs for transplant if they don't make it. Medical professionals have said it's about the only meaningful thing you can do for a victim outside of getting help.

No, there is no particular interaction with alcohol and aspirin, aspirin is a very old medicine whose effects are well known. Alcohol doesn't mix well with anything really, but unless you have other issues going on, like already being on blood thinners, you want to take aspirin if you have chest pains, a heart attack, or a stroke.

This thing haunts me every few months since always. You can usually stop it by exhaling deeply and relaxing muscles in affected areas.

I haven't had it in so many years, but I eventually got to the point where I'd just take a deep breath and it would seem to pop away. It would hurt, but then it would stop.

It's more common in young adults and children, and I'm approaching middle age here unfortunately, but the upside is no more precordial catch.

Yeah, this is how I used to deal with it. You just eat that stabbing pain for a few seconds and then it's gone.

I haven't had this in probably 15 or more years at this point, which seems to be consistent with the syndrome itself being most common in young adults, teens, and children.

I've definitely had some work done in the abdominal region, it's not common or painful and does get checked annually. Thank you.
