It's amazing because I've been a Windows user my whole life and never really had a problem with it until around Windows 11 time. And how I just hate it.

Same. I didn't even worry about Linux until a year ago, and was willing to put up with the buggy dual boot for two months before wiping it. Luckily I got a new laptop last fall and it works perfectly on this one. I LOVE Mint and prefer it over Windows for nearly everything.

Welcome Linux newbie :) There can be secrets in .config and so you need to be deliberate about what you commit while also ensuring that your .gitignore file is properly filled out to exclude the files which would have secrets that you don't want to be portable. This requires a bit of work and you will, in the process, learn about how every single application that you use stores its config. You ...

Thanks for the extensive explanation. I was almost certain you were joking about using Git for that purpose but it seems you are being serious :)

I will stick to my Restic backups for now. :)

PipeWire not working?

could be, but probably referring to no notifications, fan noise, and/or HDD clicking

Which card? There's a few distros that handle installing the drivers for you (Nobara and Bazzite spring to mind) If it's an issue of outdated hardware it can be tricky but doable. I have an old Thinkpad with an Nvidia Quadro K2000 that I got working with MX Linux without too much hassle

Sometimes screencaps of xitter posts look like the repost the original post is below, and the repost's comments are above. It's really annoying, and makes it hard to tell on other screencaps where it should be obvious that it's read top-down.

This is a mastodon post.

Tried again last weekend to install and play "Strange Antiquities" on linux mint. Again - as expected - shit wouldn't work.

Linux people say their shitty software works, but it actually doesn't. And they're to antisocial to come together and work united on 1 distro and 1 distro only to make it better for everyone.

How are you all just swapping OSes all the time like it's nothing? I have so much shit to configure.

But that's the fun part. I switch OSes so I can get back into configuring.

Strange, it's verified on steam so it should work with no problem, did you try forcing compatibility tools in game properties?

Can't wrap your head around multiple specialized distros existing, or what's the issue?

Huh? Game works fine on my Steam Deck and my Bazzite laptop. Using regular Proton without having to change anything.

Honestly, this is such a great idea. Get the IT team to create a bootable distro with all the apps the average user needs. Have a video they can watch to get the basics down, have IT available to install one-off software. At the end of the week give people the choice to keep going or go back to Windows/Mac and get feedback. Try again in a couple of quarters. Most people use web-based apps anyway.

I don't think a week is long enough

And then @lightnsfw@reddthat.com heard about NixOS, where the whole OS, along with all services like Matrix or nginx is configured using a couple of text files, all versioned in Git...

Skimmed your history to see if there was any indication of what your hardware/setup was. Slim on details beyond "Linux mint with an old/underpowered CPU", but I happen to have a Linux Mint machine with an astonishingly bad CPU (Pentium Gold 4425Y, 2 cores, 1.7GHz) and only 4GB of RAM, so I decided to give it a spin.

Downloaded the demo from steam, changed nothing, hit play, game launched just fine and got to the main menu, but crashed to desktop trying to actually start the game. Tried a bit of tinkering, no dice.

Did run just fine with no tinkering on two other more powerful machines though.

This is a mastodon post.

I realize that, what I said was that the prevalence of posts (mostly from xitter) that read bottom to top creates the situation where it's not automatically obvious at a glance that a post should be ready from top-down anymore. Hence the confusion of the commenter above.

I was explaining why they had to ask, not wondering why this post is read top-down.

No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to.

It's kinda nice when you learn to like the defaults.

There's no "defaults" for a bunch of shit I use my PC for.
