A graphic showing a row of empty microphones on stands at a press conference table, symbolizing many voices. The text on the image reads: “Did you know? Proportional representation weakens the grip party leadership has over its members.” Below, additional text says: “When seats are proportional, leaders cannot assume loyalty. MPs can leave, form new parties, or run independently without automatically ruining their political careers or handing victory to the opposition through vote splitting. That pressures parties to not take their supporters for granted.” At the bottom, the source is listed as “Arend Lijphart, Patterns of Democracy, Yale University Press,” followed by “Learn more at fairvote.ca.”

Proportional representation does the opposite. It gives MPs and voters real alternatives, which forces parties to listen instead of taking support for granted.
