When people say an act is of desperation, they mean someone willing to throw away anything besides their most important thing. This isn't an act of desperation, because even if he "pays up" it doesn't negatively effect them. It's like if you were robbing me, so I said "wait, if you don't take my stuff, you can rob the neighbor!" An act of desperation is if a home invader had a gun to your head ...

Trump should be afraid of what losing the majority will do to his dictatorship.

Also don’t forget that he has dementia and likely thinks of values from the early 80s, when $5000 still bought a decent new car, and the average income was 25k (median around 20k).

But as stupid as Trump voters are in the first place, they are bound to believe him. Regardless that the promised DOGE checks have somehow disappeared...

I don't doubt that you're correct, but it's all the more reason to vote.

They’ll find a way to only pay republican voters. Possibly while looking to expel anyone who isn’t at the same time.

Do you really believe someone who voted for Trump to be smart enough to recognize this as a scam?

Although, I just saw the snippet of his promise on TV, and noticed that he said 'dollars', not 'US dollars'. So it could be 'Guyanese dollars'. They even have a nice 5000 Dollar note:

It would still be aboutish 24 us dollars each.

I promise everyone eleventy bajillion dollars if they don't vote for him and his moron squad.

Someone could argue you can't deliver those billions. That person might not be on Lemmy, but let me say this: if you vote for Trump and do get 5000$ from him, his batshit crazy politics will certainly cost you more than that. At the same time, if he loses and the US goes back to 'normal', you might not get elevently bajillion from this guy but you will get a more capable leader that takes economy advice more serious which at the end of the line will mean more money for everyone who is not a billionaire. It really is an easy choice. Don't vote for Trump, you're already finding out why you shouldn't. Don't do it please.

I didn't say billions I said bajillions and I am just as likely to deliver on my promise as trump is, which is to say not at all.

But pointless sarcasm aside you are 100% correct.

Hmm, some people already thought he was up for election this year so this might increase that error. If that thought translates to more Dem wins then that's cool!

Edit: but please better critical thinking education and funding for it, add Demon Haunted World as required reading and a test for comprehension and use irl.

$5000 isn't enough money for me to change the way i vote. The negative impact of giving them more power is greater than the positive impact of that money, I could use it though. If Dems take over both chambers they should send approve the stimulus to spite him. Make him veto it and have him say he's vetoing it because Americans didn't vote the way he wanted them to.

I am desperate right now, financially. 5k wouldn't fix my life, but it is the exact figure I need to ensure I have stable housing for the next year+ and can have the ability to get a decent job.

Wouldn't do it. Wouldn't do it 100k.

Reminds me of the time when Joe Biden promised $2000 COVID relief checks, and then when Dems won Georgia, those checks magically became $1400 instead.

Don't trust a politician (and especially Donald) when they promise shit like this. This is the third time he's gone to this well. (Remember the imaginary DOGE dividend and the tariff rebate checks?)

Every US adult, or every US person who can consent. Because by his definition that might increase the number of people dramatically.

I don't think Trump has ever thought about consent in any context.

Which stunt, the covid checks that were actual money in pocket multiple times or Trump's corporate rebate checks? I mean both delivered financial relief but only one delivered exclusively to corporate donors.

Does this not count as election interference the same way musk promising to pay people for voting is?

I don't think so, as it's not a specific promise for a given vote.

Making promises to voters is kind of a core part of democracy. "Elect me and I will do policy X". I mean, it's not conventionally a check, and Trump is something like the polar opposite of a truthful person, but in fundamental terms, I don't think that there's anything wrong with it.

What you can't do is something like "fill out your ballot for Person Y, send me a picture, and I'll pay you $N".

  • US Population yesterday was just under 349M

  • 21.07% of the population is under 18

  • Leaving just over 270.5M eligible adults in the US.

  • Even shaving off a generous 500,000 people as illegal, that makes it $1.35T this would cost.

so you are pretty damn close @RaoulDook@lemmy.world

The mere announcement was enough to tank the price of US treasuries: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-09-10/trump-payout-pledge-adds-to-bond-market-jitters-as-auction-looms

Seems other countries aren’t to keen to help finance Trump’s tension fart of an idea…

The stunt Biden promised 2k checks during that midterm runoff in Georgia. But only sent 1400. That was a fucking too.

That sounds like semantics to me. One president delivered cash to people in a time of need and uncertainty. 1400 vs 2000 is demanding perfection instead of good. He did send multiple checks as well. Trump's offered multiple times and hasn't delivered any checks to anyone. The rebate was a tariff refund to corporations after consumers paid for it.

I'm not arguing that $600 bucks is chump change but $1400 is better than nothing and to say both are liars or promise breakers is not a fair equivalency.

It reminds me of Batman the first Tim Burton one in 1989, in which the Joker promises to give away a ton of money in the town square (so he can kill them all with poison gas).

I'm also reminded of the anti-union signs that suggest getting a game console instead of paying union dues.
