Every phone has widgets. That's not customizing a UI element. If you change the colors and fonts of everything, if you have an opinion on the minimize animation, if you spend more time ricing your machine than using it, you're a dork.

Just to clarify: Android had widgets from the very beginning. iOS got widgets in version 14.

That's a shame to hear. I wonder how many of the ideas will be able to be rewritten by actual human developers and how much of it will have to be scrapped.

It might take longer to find out why something is working-ish than to just get it working.

Yes...

It was an exaggeration for effect, highlighting how while malware apps were a problem, desktop programs containing malware were even worse....

So obviously we wouldn't just look at one slice of the pie.

We'd start regulating all digital products and holding people accountable.

I mean shit man, I started out with:

you can’t sell fire extinguishers to people that are filled with gasoline.

Obviously no one is doing that either, but selling fire extinguishers you know don't work still isn't allowed. Consumers need a regulated market or else they won't spend because they think they'll always be ripped off. We're already seeing it to some extent.

Ability to change colors and fonts are accessibility features, animation can be distracting and frustratingly long, what's dorky about trying to change the behaviour of device instead of changing yourself to meet some dorks expectations on how things should look and feel?

If you honestly believe I'm talking about people with legitimate reasons to change these things then you're an even bigger dork.

you will be served by geriatric gen x and then millenials

Is it because they are more knowledgeable or just too poor to retire?

WTAF are: very mid ui design kinda floaty feeling unpolished vibe supposed to mean?

From the perspective of a longtime hater of both iOS and Android:

  • very mid UI design:

I can’t press everything with one hand because the phone is too big (iOS “caught up“ to this a looong time ago with the iPhone 6)

  • kinda floaty feeling

The idea was that it would be customizable, the end result is that none of the menus feel “permanent.” As iOS has gotten more customizable, it now has this “feature” too.

  • unpolished vibe

iOS used to feel like it had very centralized design. Android was basically a bunch of different “Androids” doing a bunch of different stuff. Nowadays, iOS feels like it lacks focus as well.

Shittest thing about Android phones are all those third party apps, which you can’t even remove (looking at especially you, Samsung) Facebook, and so on. Unbelievable amount of bloat ware with almost every manufacturer. I would like to have Samsung, but I just can’t stand its UI and those apps.

This isn't the case on their flagships in the EU (not sure which is the reason).
I have never had Facebook or other crap preinstalled since my Samsung Note 10.
That said, samsung best be avoided anyway.

if I'm gonna use the same phone for years, I'll take a couple days to perfect how i want it to look, Android makes that easy

I've been an android user since I started using smart phones in the late 2000s. Android IMO has always been more user friendly and allowing someone to create their own "desktop" so to speak. Meanwhile Apple was always the "I don't like technology" phone. There was no customization, the "desktop" was just the Android app page and nothing else. Nothing could be unique to you outside of a wallpape...

My first android was an alcatel with android 3. I loved it, but it was quite bad in many ways, even for the time. It took android a long time to mature.
Let's hope mobile Linux won't take as long.

This is such an oversimplification and shows you don't understand how much work goes into this.

Their generated code has been criticised by some kernel developers because of lack of quality. I think some sensors were accessed without using hexagonrpcd, which means battery usage will be unnecessarily high, which is an improper way of doing it.

Again, any source for this argument with the hexagon processor? My patches has been plenty criticized by kernel developers, but so are fully manually written patches, which is the entire point of the kernel review process. Unless you seriously are saying that everyone on the list who has sent a v2 is a bad quality programmer.

When we were talking in DMs i again asked you for your source, reason, or any info for this so i can look at it and fix it if needed, but again you just result to throwing insults like you did in DM.

Also, mainline kernel support is actively being worked on by Fairphone employees, which know the hardware best. All remaining features will be added in due time.

They are being added, by me, by nondescriptpointer, by Luca, by the people at Qualcomm. I have good contact with them for this. I don't understand your grudge against me.

likely there are still some system apps that are literal bloatware. if you have f-droid you can check the debloater list in this app, has descriptions on most of them.

https://f-droid.org/packages/io.github.muntashirakon.AppManager

be very careful if you are going to remove some. the descriptions are not always up to date

They are already organized in the photos app. If you don’t like the photos app and how it organizes then you’re free to use a different one. Each app gets its own file system sandbox so if you wanted a simple folder structure that you manually manage, there is no technical reason that isn’t possible on iOS. I’ve personally never looked at other photos apps so I can’t recommend one.

Each app gets its own file system sandbox

Noice. Is this sandbox accessible (for reading at least) by any other app, including file managers and terminal emulators?

And while we are at it: are the paths to different sandboxes organized in a consistent way?

Their biggest selling point is regulated app stores... Completely ignoring the obvious downsides of letting private for profit corporations regulate marketplaces while facing no regulations themselves. It's shit the government should be doing

They're really astroturfing youtube ads right now (I know, ick, youtube, and I should use plugins; I normally don't use it at all but lately I've had a couple songs I've been listening too on repeat. I should just download them).

Like, almost every fucking ad is "some apps are traps, can you spot the trap" with these stupid cartoony characters representing apps and suddenly one (at random, with no rhyme or reason) blows up and the narrator says "google play can."

Like fuck off, google play says whatever they want to say is a trap is a trap. Meanwhile they allow all these predatory BS apps on their store. They'll let you fall for the traps they approve of. And they won't even show you what country an app developer is based in until after you download it.

But they're trying to give people this false sense of security like "oh, I can trust anything on the play store" while also making them suspicious/hesitant to use any alternative app repos. It's clearly an attempt to manufacture consent for their ecosystem lockdown, and unfortunately it will probably work. They're targeting easily-influenced young people with these supposedly "cute" (yet honestly kinda gross) characters.

Crazy how they even let other manufacturers modify base Android. Even the settings menus are all over the place. Searching for specific settings is basically impossible if you're not on a Pixel or something.

Don't even get me started on the dev side of things. Makes Windows habit of stacking 30 years of shit look like paradise.

https://docs.postmarketos.org/policies-and-processes/development/ai-policy.html

postmarketOS bans contributions written either entirely or in part by LLMs, so your contributions would be disqualified under those policies.

The Linux kernel, as far as I'm aware, does not have these same policies, so if your changes were to be mainlined, then the Linux kernel changes would then trickle down to pmOS, but your userspace programs/services would still not be able to be accepted upstream, nor would any of the non-mainlined kernel changes.

The already mainlined kernel patches wouldn't need to be rewritten since they're already in the mainline kernel. I didn't see where you specified that before.

But not all HWE is in the kernel. For example, your userspace VoLTE daemon is extremely useful for those who need VoLTE, but would not be able to be packaged in pmOS so other devices can benefit from it, since pmOS is the de facto mainline Linux distro for mobile (there are others, but pmOS is the largest and where most development is done). Same goes for your fingerprint daemon.

There is, of course, also the ethical matter of using AI, as the pmOS page mentions, but balancing issues of pragmatism and principles have been a challenge in the FOSS community since the beginning (ex: "free software" vs "open source").

On the last point about understanding the code, I feel you've shown that you are able to understand the code that you commit, or at least I hope that you do. I'm willing to take you at your word when it comes to that.

I agree with the points pmos makes but banning AI seems shortsighted imo, i know my userspace stuff won't make it into pmos. I see that as the choice of pmos and i will respect that, if someone wants to rewrite it fully by hand by all means do so its GPL but i won't do it as i don't see much point into it.

I host an APK registry that people can point at, so other devices can make use of it if imsd supports them, which in theory yes any qualcomm modem should be supported but i haven't tested it either.

I understand the code in the sense that i can read C and know what the problems and solutions are, but not in the full architectural sense, i am fully admitting that i must understand it better and that AI undermines this understanding.

I will soon make a post about it.

If you agree with the points, then how is the ban shortsighted? It's not like the ban can't be revisited in the future.

While you do host a repo, pmOS device packages can't depend on imsd/fingerprintd/etc. since they're not in pmOS's main repo, so it adds extra steps for the end-user. I'm unsure if pmbootstrap supports building images with external APKs either, and if not, it would have to be done post-install.

There is another problem that I haven't mentioned, and that is since your packages already exist, that demotivates other people from working on LLM-free code that performs the same task, even if it doesn't eliminate it entirely.

If you do not fully understand the code you're working on in a deep, architectural sense, is that something you are willing to improve upon over time to the point where you will no longer need to use LLMs to code?

I await your post about it, as I'm curious about your viewpoint, especially going more in-depth.

Why i believe a hard ban is shortsighted is that it prevents real features like mine from being upstreamed.

I agree its inconvenient that they are on my own repo, but either i rewrite it fully manually which i might do someday but i really don't have the time for now or pmos changes their rules.

Willing? absolutely, but as i will say in my post, understanding a single subsystem of the kernel at a deep level is going to take a very long time, and i am working across all of them, one thing i understand on a deep architectural level is graphics programming, it has taken around i believe 5 years of making my own engine to truly understand it an expert level and even them im sure there is plenty of vulkan stuff i still don't know.

Truly understanding the kernel at a expert level will take an equal amount of time.

I have taken the decision that having an fully working capable linux phone with AI now is better then one done manually over 5 years.

If there was no reason to post it i would agree, but here its important context.

If a person attacks me publicly while referring to points made in a DM where no private info was shared that is important context then i think its better to be transparent about this then hide this.

You said i was posting lies earlier, this is direct proof against your claim as this conversation did happen. Which there would not have been if i hadn't posted it.

Sorry, but fuck Apple back to the depths of hell in which it came 🤬.
But honestly, I think they build decent hardware but absolute can't stand the OS.

Doesn't it just need a 24 hour wait to unlock sideloading?

They're boiling the android frog until it is no better than apple. Sailfish and Postmarket is the future.

iOS still doesn't allow multi-window and pop up app view or even the latest bubble apps on Android unless you pay for the iPhone Duo or get an iPad.

No IOS third-party app store either in Canada.

Yes and you have to make Google account, Samsung account and what else before you can use all the features. It’s was totally mess, when I last had Samsung. Their hardware is very nice, though.
