The last thing I watched in theaters was a reshowing of the Fellowship of the Ring. Everything else is on a buddy's Plex server. Fuck the movies I ain't paying 50 dollars for sticky floors and shitty snacks. I can do both of those at home.

I took my kid and his friend to see Deadpool, the first one. That was my last time for me.

They could offer a better experience, something that would draw me, but they're not even close to matching what I have at home for now. And, maybe they couldn't do it profitably anymore, I don't know.

Twenty years from now, movie theaters will only be left in big cities, that have enough people nearby to support them. But, even then, they'll need to change what they do.

Its not building a world, it's merging several worlds and then saying the physics all match up and the magic only works in one way or another while not working in other areas. Dudes got like 80 books or some shit. Unless he was really just using the same stuff over and over which would get tired by the second or third series, I just don't see how it would blend well.

if you read them you'll see that they do blend well

it sounds like you won't, but I have read everything published and the numerous magic systems all feel very unique, but are based on a very sound central logic

one of his foundational tenets in writing magic systems is something like exploring the limits of a magic system before you expand it, and he absolutely does that

mistborn's second trilogy is a perfect example of that, there's not new magic, or at least not much of it, but a remixing of what was in the first trilogy and all of the implications of that remixing was more than enough for the second trilogy

I’m with you. I feel a bit bad because my husband loves (or loved) the experience of going to the movies, whereas I couldn’t care less and would prefer my couch. But we used to go because he enjoyed it, and it was nice to avoid spoilers for big things. Nowadays between having kids and the overall experience of movie-going having completely gone down the shitter and more expensive to boot, we do...

I keep thinking some movie will come along that will make me want to go again. The only one that comes to mind is Spaceballs 2, because I expect the audience to be completely into it. But, even then, I'll probably just wait.

What's wrong with the fans? I've heard he has some books worth reading but never had someone demanding I read them or something

the fans aren't insufferable as a rule, but any fanbase large enough will have a loud minority that is insufferable, and sanderson has a large fanbase

I bet had Tolkien write TLotR in 2000, well into the information age, we would see exactly the same thing

excellent world building, but plots that are fine

people really like good world building. like, really really like it.

Do you live in the sticks or what? Tickets are $15 and every theater I've been to since COVID has been clean.

You're right. They're including multiple tickets, snacks, etc., methinks. But, also, $15 is too high for the experience offered, IMO.

As of 2025, the average price of a standard movie ticket in the United States is about $11.50, though it varies widely by city, theater, and time of day.
Big cities (New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco): $15–$20 for a standard ticket
Midsize cities (Denver, Dallas, Atlanta): $12–$15
Smaller towns / rural areas: $8–$11
Premium formats (like IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 3D) add extra costs — usually $3–$7 more per ticket.

If you think Harry Potter doesn't have the scale of Star Wars then you're crazy. As proof of this, Universal built their Harry Potter lands, and Disney tried to compete with their Star Wars land. They're pretty equal in scale. (Well, unless you mean the scale of their universe, but that's silly.)

You've misunderstood their comment.

I don't think so. Because nobody can get the funding for anything original anymore. Its all cobtroles by business men and everyone wants as much profit as possible. Also one of the reasons everything is so bland and pg 13.

I'd like to counter with the example of Terminator, the original one was done almost entirely via guerilla filming and had a shoestring budget, seriously they made money on the nightclub scene because people just kinda started to show up to their illegal set since guerilla nightclubs were also a thing at the time. All it would take for a similar success is someone just kinda getting lucky and getting popular through word of mouth.

Hell even Star Wars had a fuck all budget initially and Lucas was 100 percent ready to just do a new hope and then switch over to books and comics, then it turned into a massive cultural success.

I'm happy to see more movies like Dust Bunny, Hail Mary, and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't die.

But, I also like TV shows better, Dark Matter, The Gentlemen, Lucky, etc. Because, they go longer and have time to dive into the details. Movies seem rushed and truncated to me after watching a series of eight or ten episodes now.

I don't want another huge franchise, I just want somewhat original stories NOT based in established universes. It's better if they don't go on for 10 sequels spaced years apart. That format is better suited to TV, where we get a whole season across a few weeks, one or two seasons then it's done, and we get something fresh.

Young people don't go to movies as much as older people used to. They don't care for "boomer media", they want games, interaction. We're in the middle of a big upheaval in entertainment, it will be interesting to see what comes of this. I think the next big thing won't be another big franchise, but some sort of AR, multi-participant interactive media. Not Fortnight, or Minecraft, etc. Something more approachable for the masses and more short-term, with a conclusion.

not based of the current slop, universe where one show or movie is just promoting the next movie or show.

Slops are a great hope, since they can prove a concept with a low budget ; and budget is usually that creators miss the most.

Slops can be made without the validation of some majors, and even if they don't match the market. So without being retouched by marketing people into becoming a tasteless thing.

That doesn't prevent slops to be mostly shit, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if some new great things come from them...

Because those aren't new?

hot take: a new Star Wars or Marvel will emerge in our lifetimes. something completely original and not based on 50+ year old intellectual property…

The original post said a new “Star Wars” not and then not an IP from over 50 years ago. Not that the IP just came out this year or however you want to define “new”.

The very first Harry Potter book came out came out in 1997, which was almost 30 years ago. A Game Of Thrones came out in 1996, exactly 30 years ago. Both blew up and were massive cultural touchstones, not unlike how Star Wars is/was.

What I want to see is,
A Long Earth TV series, not necessarily based on the book I just think it's an interesting universe.
The Bobbyverse books made into movies.
More of Garrick, he can be doing literally anything, I just want more of him.
And yet more Star Wars stuff, but KOTOR era.

If memory serves right he renegotiated at some point during filming to more or less retain all rights cause the studio thought it was going to be a flop, he even got the merchandise sales. I imagine those executives were on suicide watch pretty damned quick. Given how even during this lackluster Disney era Star Wars still generates an absurd amount of money through merchandise alone I suspect that has to be one of the biggest fuck ups in film rights period.

Because, they go longer and have time to dive into the details. Movies seem rushed and truncated to me after watching a series of eight or ten episodes now.

OTOH, a lot of TV shows spend too much time on filler content in an attempt to both increase runtime but also build anticipation. Only to have the resolution at the end of the season rushed with zero room for the emotional outcome to expand and relax. Which gives it an unsatisfying feeling.

Then, movies (that are done well) make efficient use of their time budget to tell the story and not have multiple hours of empty filler content to pad out the runtime.

A common issue is early super hero movies was the constant re-introduction of various characters, instead of just telling the story. Which resulted in half the movie re-explaining who these various people are and then only half to tell the actual story.

Both TV and movies have their place, it just depends on the material how well it fits.

For example, I don't think Lord of the Rings would have worked as a TV show, and I don't think Wheel of Time would work as movies.

That being said, one of the things that killed WoT was the baffling decision to veer so far from the source material. The first season spent more than half the runtime on small minor things, or things that never even happened.

I'm not sure I agree, to get that same experience at home I'd need a 6-figure purpose-built room with a bluray copy of each movie so $15 once a month isn't too bad.

Most people are happy enough streaming low bitrates on their 55" Walmart TV with a $100 soundbar so it's definitely not an experience for everyone but I'd consider $10/hour is pretty good rate. I value home entertainment closer to $1/hour

It's exactly the point. "A new Star Wars or Marvel within our lifetime" was the prediction, and we're arguing that one such example has already existed. Unless you are a child and weren't alive/conscious and therefore don't consider it within your lifetime?

Exactly how are you reading that wrong? A new Star Wars or Marvel. A new massive universe. As the next sentence you didn't quote says , something new and original not based on existing properties. Not specifically those two things. They're just examples. This is basic reading comprehension.

There are a lot of popular IPs, but at the same level of Star Wars and Marvel?

I'm not even sure if it's still possible. The availability of everything over the internet divided people lot more over what they like.

I'm not sure how you're missing this. Get off of Star Wars. That was just an example. Nothing about that post says there's been nothing new since Star Wars. Star Wars and Marvel were used as examples of huge culturally significant interconnected universes. Massive intellectual properties. That's the point of the post. They're saying there's going to be a new one of that scale sometime in the future. In no way are they saying nothing new has been created since Star Wars. If you read it that way you read it incorrectly.

Well I absolutely do not think Harry Potter has the same scale as Star Wars. It's not nearly as well thought out or as extensive or is interconnected. It was written by a brain dead Turf who had had to retcon every single book because she couldn't keep her thoughts straight after when she wrote the next one.

However that was absolutely not the point I was making.

I don't think you're aware of how poorly written most of Star Wars is then.

Yes, the writer for HP sucks, and the books are poorly written, but that's not really relevant to this discussion. Just watch the sequels of Star Wars especially for how poorly written it is. None of this affects the original premise of the post. There are other things written significantly better that aren't as popular, but the OP wasn't talking about those.

If you want to argue that only the original series of SW matters, that has a tiny scale. It hardly explains anything and it just exists in a universe that isn't explained. The OP isn't talking about just the original trilogy.

Obviously there's more SW content though, but it's had a few decades head start. The point is the HP is a similar scale for the same time period (if anything, it's significantly larger).

Did I? The OP is obviously discussing the market share, or culture share. HP obviously is similar to SW. If they meant the number of other pieces of media then sure, SW is bigger, but not for the same point in time. HP is much larger for how old it is.

If I'm still misunderstanding, would you care to explain, rather than just saying it's misunderstanding it?

Another very popular franchise of questionable quality is The Big Bang Theory, which now has three spinoff series. Good quality? Debatable. Very popular, profitable, and likely to continue expanding? Yes.

What people are trying to explain to you here is this. You read the original post wrong. You read it as nothing new has been made since Star Wars. So you came up with examples of new things since Star Wars. Which was never the argument.

The original post was saying that in the future, meaning after the date it was posted which was like a month ago, something completely new of a huge cultural significance and a massive scale will be created that has nothing to do with anything right now. It's a post about human Innovation and creativity and about how new things are always on the horizon.

The point of the comment was that this is the most boring statement ever though. It happens all the time. "Tomorrow, the sun is probably going to rise!" That's not insightful. The point of the comment was that you don't need to wait for "the next big thing." Yeah, IPs rule everything, but new big things are still constantly being made.

Edit: Also, the OP says "in our lifetimes." That doesn't mean after that post. It means since "we" were born. Most people on this platform are at least as old as HP.
