I want it to be Backrooms or SCP.

That would be interesting

Did I? The OP is obviously discussing the market share, or culture share. HP obviously is similar to SW. If they meant the number of other pieces of media then sure, SW is bigger, but not for the same point in time. HP is much larger for how old it is. If I'm still misunderstanding, would you care to explain, rather than just saying it's misunderstanding it?

You did, yes. They weren't comparing Harry Potter to Starwars at all, they were just pointing out what the OP meant by using the example of Starwars/Marvel.

for one, harry potter is older than MCU

It's not older than Marvel. Yeah, it's older than the current thing, but they've been making Marvel movies my entire life. Spiderman is Marvel.

It says "in our lifetimes" though. HP is in pretty much all of our lifetimes. There are some people younger, but I don't think very many.

I don't think you're right. The OP is about something new within our lifetimes. HP is for most of us. The person contradicting originally said the issue was that it wasn't new. Relative to what? It's within our lifetimes, like the post says.

Ok, so next they talk about scope and scale. This is the part that could be misunderstood. Yeah, they aren't as big as SW yet, but SW had decades. Both of these are probably similarly large to SW for the same length of time after release. If anything, HP is larger, in market share, culture share, main entries, theme parks, and just about everything else. If they meant something else then yeah, I misunderstood and, and I can't see anything else it could have meant to contradict that they don't fit what the OP was discussing.

Game of Thrones basically already fits. The main book series might not finish, and the main TV show disappointed people, but the world GRRM built is spawning all sorts of spinoff stories. Who's to say what happens after he eventually dies and loses control over the franchise?

I'm happy to see more movies like Dust Bunny, Hail Mary, and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't die. But, I also like TV shows better, Dark Matter, The Gentlemen, Lucky, etc. Because, they go longer and have time to dive into the details. Movies seem rushed and truncated to me after watching a series of eight or ten episodes now. I don't want another huge franchise, I just want somewhat original storie...

Which Dark Matter?

Since you mentioned sports. I wonder if there will ever be a new sport that rises to the level of football, etc. in our lifetimes? That seems far less likely.

Start watching ESPN8: The Ocho and see which sports are on the verge of breaking containment to the mainstream.

"I want [thing]." "You need to support [thing] for it to happen." "Why are you even talking? Go away." 🙄

It was more like "Wow! You watch your shit on Plex!?" (I literally use Plex to watch old trek and Jujutsu Kaizen) "films are gonna die because YOU aren't out at indie film festivals!" Which doesnt make much sense. Thats hardly much to go off of when a lot of indie films are shown at specific theaters like the single one in my town thats hosts 70mm film. Its also a dine in and expensive. So no. I can't do that much to support indie film in my own life. I'm broke.

Yes, me pointing out the problem of them not participating is exactly the same as this. You are very intelligent.

Haskins and AMC aren't showing indie films all day. The one film buff theater in my town I know of that plays off the wall shit is a dine in, has a 70mm projector, and is expensive as fuck. I consistently have an empty bank account. I am not going to the movies.

I'm not sure I agree, to get that same experience at home I'd need a 6-figure purpose-built room with a bluray copy of each movie so $15 once a month isn't too bad. Most people are happy enough streaming low bitrates on their 55" Walmart TV with a $100 soundbar so it's definitely not an experience for everyone but I'd consider $10/hour is pretty good rate. I value home entertainment closer to $1/hour

Its not just the price of the theater. The cost of living and adulthood responsibilities also make it hard to get to the movies in the first place. I specifically need to get a baby sitter unless my wife or I are staying home too. Its just not in the cards anymore.

Does it occur to anyone that seeking to replace juvenile media with more but slightly different juvenile media means that you confess you appreciate juvenile media rather than preferring media that capable of transforming ourselves into better versions of ourselves?

Nah, of those you list I'd say only Pokemon hits the same level. There are a lot of popular IPs, but at the same level of Star Wars and Marvel? I'm not even sure if it's still possible. The availability of everything over the internet divided people lot more over what they like.

The same level as Marvel is such a tricky question.

While Marvel comics have been around and popular for way more than 50 years, they've only been popular as comics.

Look at Marvel as a popular IP when Pokemon released, their most successful product is probably the 70s Incredible Hulk TV series. In fact the company was doing so poorly is went through bankruptcy.

Selling the rights of their major properties to Fox and Sony, the late 90s and early 2000s give us Blade, X-Men and our first Spider-Man film. That's when Marvel really starts to pick up.

But of course those really ultimately fizzled out. Sure the Fox X-Men were huge. The Sony Spider-Man was huge (more the Sam Raimi films). But those are similar comparisons to the Jurassic Park and Hunger Games franchises.

But the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Kicked off in 2008 as an idea, but really given the push once Disney aquired Marvel. Push heavily on that for the last 20ish years. Now that's THE Marvel powerhouse we're talking about.

So sure, Marvel has been around for 50+ years, but the level of Marvel that makes it what it is, that's just the last 20 years.

literally true, but i think choosing only marvel and star wars as examples implies the questioner doesn’t think there was anything new between marvel and now

I mean I don't think it implies that at all. But I do agree the internet has a habit of reading things that way because the internet is psychotic. What's that old post about if you say you like pancakes someone's going to say oh so you hate waffles? Like that.

The point of the comment was that this is the most boring statement ever though. It happens all the time. "Tomorrow, the sun is probably going to rise!" That's not insightful. The point of the comment was that you don't need to wait for "the next big thing." Yeah, IPs rule everything, but new big things are still constantly being made. Edit: Also, the OP says "in our lifetimes." That doesn't me...

I'm not saying it's an insightful or original post I'm just saying you interpreted it wrong.

Also Star Wars and Marvel has been in my lifetime too. So that's an irrelevant point. By new they clearly meant something not already existing. Originality was clearly the entire point. They could have used Harry Potter as their example. It would not have changed their point. You're focusing too much on the example which wasn't the point.

Given what a shitshow Lord Miller made of Project Hail Mary, I am not holding out much hope for Bobiverse. I must merely content myself with the hope that, eventually, The Infinite Extent will be released in some way where I don't have to support fucking Amazon to read it.

Can you imagine how awful it's going to be to watch them try to explain the light-speed lag between events in different systems before SCUT? They might just take away SCUT's invention and put it in Bob's original Heaven-1 design, so that they don't have to deal with all of the relativistic time effects.

Probably why I didn't say that then, huh? Neither did I suggest you go beyond your fiscal means. But if new ideas in media is something you want, which you said, then the only way that happens is with people making a point to support it how they can outside the mainstream. You sticking solely to your home media server does nothing of use for the people making the content you're demanding.

No shit Star Wars was an example of an IP that was a cultural touchstone. That’s the whole point of the post. That a massive IP would come out, but would have been original and created in the last 50 years (sorry Lord of the Rings).

And you can’t tell me that Harry Potter nor Game of Thrones haven’t reached a cultural significance. The post said nothing about interconnected universes, you should really get off that, since you seem to have inferred that from who knows where. If you say to a random person “Winter is coming” or “Voldemort” or hell, even “Potter” almost everyone is going to think of either IP. Those are examples of a cultural touchstone from the last 30 years.

For an of-the-moment example, look at The Backrooms. Started as a series of YouTube videos some kid put together, now it’s a successful theatrical release with a sequel in development.

It’s not this generation’s Star Wars and as a horror property it doesn’t really have that potential, but to act like it’s impossible now is blowing things out of proportion.

It actually started out as weird photos on 4chan long before it got to YouTube, it's a lot like SCP in that it's a type of folk horror project. It grew out of the early liminal space art scene which has been going on and off since the 90s at least but hadn't reached maturity until around when the Backrooms popped up, though everything from Silent Hill to Kubricks The Shing have played around with elements that would merge into the movement.

Also you'd be surprised how often horror breaks into the mainstream, just to go back to the Terminator franchise T1 is explicitly a tension building thriller which is argue is a type of horror.

Also just a bit of bitching but why do people think that the Terminator timeline is a closed loop? It's stated as early as T2 that Judgement Day was delayed meaning that the Terminator timeline is either an unstable loop or a simple branching timeline, hell John may not have even existed until the first instance of time travel it couldve been Sarah leading the resistance and sent Kyle back and accidentally created John. Aight Terminator bitching over with.

To summarise:

The image is predicting a new Star Wars will emerge within our lifetimes. A new Star Wars, Game of Thrones (which is an objectively newer original IP), has emerged within our lifetimes. It is not based on a 50+ year old IP. You agree with all of this.

Someone (many people, in fact) then make this exact argument in the comments, but instead of agreeing with them you declare that everyone else has missed the point and only you are smart enough to see it. You never actually explain what it is that you're seeing differently, and under questioning deflect with a series of irrelevant ad hominem arguments.

Read more books instead of making one franchise your personality!

Your personality is so much an amalgamation of the last 100 long form media you've consumed. Make good choices, an English teacher that actually cared once told me books are important for what they make you think, not what they say. I still reread some of my old series like I'm visiting friends and refreshing core memories.

We choose who we are to a degree, are you a wizard cop that upholds the status quo (including slavery and racism) or a rebel with friends everywhere? Is winter coming or are you coming to the hanging tree?

What ideas and ideals have you internalized intentionally or unintentionally? How do you think the world works or who we're supposed to be been influenced by the movies you've seen, the news you read and watch?

See you later Space Cowboy, You're gonna carry that weight.

Those are two other examples that would have made their point for them. They just chose star wars. I don't know how to say this any clearer. I don't understand what you're not getting.

Ok, let's start over, since you don't seem to be getting it. Stop getting hung up on Star Wars. No shit they chose Star Wars.

OP said an example of Massive IP, and put forth that there'll be a new, original one that will have been created within the last 50 years. With me so far?

Someone said they didn't know why I was being down voted. You said

Because those aren’t new?

The examples I gave fit the criteria of the statement: other examples of original IPs that were created after 1976 to become massive IPs. These IPs were just other examples of newer IPs. Still with me? The OP stated some criteria and there are already examples that fit that criteria. There will continue to be other examples that fit that criteria as time goes on, ad nausem.

So off the bat, your original comment on this thread and on other other threads seem off base. There will always be a new, original IP that blows up. That's a nothing burger. Naturally, culture will find something new to obsess about, something that resonates with people. Should my comment have just been to read the post and say, "Yes, how thought provoking! There could be someone who is starting to come up with ideas right now that will become a massive IP later. How deep!"? If that's your correct interpretation that I'm not "getting", no shit. That's nothing to discuss because it's so obvious.

Talking about other examples is a way to create conversation on this thread. People can debate if Pokemon, or Jurassic Park, or even the Simpsons fit the criteria. What other examples of IPs have come out after 1976 fit? Maybe these IPs don't at the moment, but they might blow up in the near future, not unlike how Snoopy has really blown up more recently.

Maybe Snoopy will be the next big thing, could you imagine? Some cultural touchstone that has come back after it's heyday. That's not unlike Marvel, where they were big for a while, faced bankruptcy, and then became huge in the last 10 years. That's more interesting, and worth discussing than to just post "Oh my god, how true." That's something that you don't seem to get.
