Dated a girl and, while we were walking through the park, she points up at the sky. "Oh look, Chemtrails". I absolutely bust up laughing, because I assume I've accidentally stepped into a relationship with a conspiracy theorist. She looks incredibly confused. I explain what chemtrails are. She gets even more confused. We whip out our phones for a minute. She says, "Omg I meant contrails" She's ...

Oh wow, with all the memes I've only ever learned the word "chemtrails". Don't think I've ever seen the word "contrails" before, even though that certainly makes a lot more sense...

really. so a middle-class black kid has less privilege than a poor white kid? or maybe privilege is about money and power? and skin color has very little to do with that.

Skin color has a ton to do with who has money and power. That's, like, the central theme of American history.

Pretending to believe in astrology to get laid is kind of rapey by today’s standards.

What's the difference in pretending to believe in astrology and pretending to be interested in anything else they're saying?

I'd say the stock market more broadly and crypto is only the latest iteration of it. But, yes, absolutely.

Irrespective of its truthfulness, astrology is really cool! I love learning about it. I also really like alchemy. It's kinda like looking at someone's fanfic AU. Of course 17th century guys were inventing cute lil alphabets, pretending they belonged to angels, and writing lil secret notes. Of course someone looked up at the sky and then invented a whole magic system about how the pictures affect our lives. Humans never change.

In fact things like Tarot and astrology can be used to ascribe meaning to some of the ways in which we behave - like, you can't tell the future objectively from it, but you can figure things out about your own current feelings based on what you gravitate to and what the results make you think about.

I'm pretty indifferent to astrology these days, but I have spent enough time studying the basics of how it works that I think anyone criticizing it should also at least have a basic enough understanding of it that they can criticize the thing itself rather than the stereotype of the thing. If you're going to attack something for being stupid, it's a good idea to not be stupid yourself.

They aren't saying astrology these days is too polarized or something. They're saying the basic premise behind astrology itself is nonsensical. It's like expecting an atheist to read the Bible.

What's sadder is that yoga, chakras, and crystals are traditionally from religions within the Indian subcontinent. Westerners are simply taking aspects of South Asian cultures, indigenous cultures, African cultures, and then bastardising them into marketable "neo-pagan witchcraft."

I was raised without religion. Decided I was atheist as soon as I came across the word as a kid.

I've read large parts of the Christian Bible, in a "know thy enemy" sort of way.

Also, reading the Bible is one way atheists come to be atheists.

That said, I have zero interest in learning more about astrology. Yes, it's completely nonsensical, and not worth anyone's time pursuing. There's nothing behind it. The "basics of how it works" is that it obviously doesn't work at all. It's complete bullshit.

The belief in an external world beyond our senses is unfalsifiable. Yet, we experience social pressure to conform to that belief without evidence. Thus, realism is a religion.

Yeah. It's like any other religion, I guess.

Fun fact, tarot cards were invented in the late Middle Ages (from other similar cards which were popular around then, I think imported from the East?) and were used to play a game called Trumps. That's why the major arcana cards are also known as trump cards. The magical ot esoteric aspect was added later. This means that technically, using tarot to "read the future" has as much inherent validity as any other deck of cards.... I wanna see someone try with Pokemon or Uno cards 😂😂

It is a divination form. You flip 3 coins a couple of times (or flip sticks originally I believe) and you get an answer in a very vague wise person way.

I believe it is based on an Asian book that was written a while back. It was popular back in the Eu about.... 25 years ago. Way easier than tarot reading. I never got into that - tho I do love the symbolism of the cards, I even wanted to make a set from scratch.

No, it's like an atheist criticizing the Bible by saying things that are untrue about the Bible. If you care enough about something to be informed enough to make a credible critique, that's fine. But if you're just going to harbor and further perpetuate false stereotypes about a thing, maybe just stay in your lane and a, "Hey I don't know about that stuff and I don't care," is all you need.

But atheists never claim "Abraham had two dads", and anti-astrology people don't say "Geminis like jalapeños".
