Two FOSS apps that I regularly use that haven't been updated in quite a while, Material Files and LinkSheet

And that worries me a bit

  1. The first is Material Files. It is a great file manager with the added bonus of having a built-in FTP server functionality. Its great if you want to send things to someone at their house or something. For my own stuff I use localsend, but in case someone doesn't have it installed, use iOS or even if they use Android and don't want to go through rigamarole of installing a specific app, its a great tool

I have been trying to donate to the project for years but the maintainer always writes back that he isn't accepting donations because it somehow conflicts with his job. So every year, I just send him a thank you.

But the last update was two-ish years ago and I am getting worried

2.) The second app is one that attempts to restore a basic android functionality that Google has stupidly stripped away. You used to be able to choose which app you want to open a link with. For example if you have a reddit link, you can choose any browser or RedReader. Same with youtube links, you can choose a browser or NewPipe or others. And google took that helpful feature away.

LinkSheet does a really good job of restoring functionality. It is just a little clunky, but I think it does the job fairly well.

Unfrotunately its been almost three years since that app was last updated.

I use to donate to LinkSheet reguarly, but I think this year was the first year that I didn't (simply because there weren't any updates).

Maybe my fears are overblown, maybe both of these apps don't need updates. They are currently compatible with Android and from the point of view of the developers, are feature complete.

But it does have me worried what if they end up breaking and the developers have indeed abandoned the project.

Its also why I try to donate to these small apps; they provide me with vital functionality and I don't know what I'm going to do if they go away.
