Shortly after the update went live, download speeds for many players slowed to a crawl (around 100 KB/sec).

People on stream are reporting that the patch size is at least 500 MB, with a few reports of it being over 1 GB and still climbing

This post says the launch client downloader isn't actually downloading anything (stuck in a retry loop) and it is safe to cancel (and wait until ANet fixes the issue). The downloaded size is just counting the bytes in the error response.
