I have some conflicting ideas about "Love on the Spectrum" but overall, I feel better knowing that there is at least some positive representation. Their social "mistakes" are seen as funny or charming, and some people may find it infantilizing. For me, it's helped me be more accepting of myself and feel like certain quirks are not a big deal in the grand scheme of everything - many people find love on the show and are still unapologetically themselves. I struggle with forgiving myself/not feeling shame for social mistakes, so this has helped a little bit. It's somehow helped me not take myself so seriously.

Now, some critiques of the show:

  • it shows a narrow type of people on the spectrum- those who are comfortable enough to be on camera, are verbal, and many of them have "cool" special interests. It's understandable that they'd focus on the more interesting people, though, because it's reality TV at the end of the day.

  • it shows an idealized world where the neurotypical world is accepting of them. This might deviate too far from the goal of the show- which is to focus on love- but it hardly shows enough of the autistic struggle in work, school, and just life in general. The show touches on it, but it moves quickly as if the producers are shy about showing the more unfortunate sides of autism.

  • waaaaay too much involvement of the parents/guardians. I'm cool with having them as side characters, but some of them have way too much to say, and they divulge a lot of personal things. I'd much rather see the autistic people speak for themselves only- I don't see the need for their parents to be so involved. The show needs to show autistic people as independent people as much as possible.

Let me know what you think!
