Greer still is the worst recent offender in my book but the new meta certainly is a painful reminder of how badly this can be screwed up. By contrast Jessica Hammerhart demonstrates that almost everything they got wrong with the new meta in this regard was already solved and done well. So, in the new meta the damage log states I got hit twice for 20k damage each by something called "Ubaldesca (sp?) Craters". In full celestial gear. While all Avatars were engaged so no "oh you failed the mechanic, everyone dies" excuse. FORTY THOUSAND DAMAGE! I have no idea what that attack is. A sneaking suspicion it might be the line+circle chain slam, but between random aegis from allies and not actively trying to get hit by every attack to learn its name who knows? You know what would be helpful here? A bright orange-red flashing "YOU ARE GOING TO DIE IF YOU GET HIT BY THIS!" indicator akin to Jessica's spinning blades, Decima's red line of death at the conduits, or the central area of her ground slam which hits through evade. If the culprit is in fact the chain slam, it just has a regular orange circle telegraph. You know what else has that same style of telegraph? The chain swipe, which hits for like 3k and maybe applies vuln. That attack is so non-threatening it doesn't need the telegraph at all, just let the boss do its thing while we ignore it via healing/barrier/whatever. And then there's the spinning weapons. Very similar to Jessica's, in fact arguably less threatening without the immob. Except where Jessica has an orange warning circle and arrow before she casts, and a BRIGHT FLASHING RED circle while the blades are active showing the exact AoE, this new version has ...nothing. NO TELEGRAPH AT ALL! You have to rely on the murky purple swirling animation of the attack itself, on top of the platform stained in murky purple starry effects and covered in other players' skill animations, in order to tell there is any threat at all. The three smallest ones right underneath the boss might as well just be invisible, you'll notice just as quickly from the bleed itself. And this might be the boss's second-strongest attack, with the Simon CC only serving to root you in the spinning blades and kill you that way. Now contrast that with Jessica. She has very clear telegraphs on her spinning blades (easily the biggest actual threat tbh), clear crosshair+line telegraphs on her "killshot" projectiles which do in fact down you from full health if you don't counteract them, a big orange circle on her AoE stun, and less obstructive telegraphs on her weaker attacks and the ambient arena cannons. Basically if you ignore the achievement she's close to perfect in terms of telegraphs matching the threat level. And don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that the new meta is too "hard". If anything, despite having played it less, I find the second Avatar phase easier than the final phase against both Hammerhart twins. Admittedly a lot of that is due to Jessica teleporting around the obstructions while littering the arena with the spinning blades but still. Yet, I go down a lot less fighting her simply because her attacks are well telegraphed. Since I opened with Greer (and all his spawn tbh) a word on that one too: he has a bunch of VERY flashy yellow-and-purple corruption attacks which do ...nothing? Almost nothing? 2-4k from Greer himself and a few token stacks of low dps poison or torment? Meanwhile the travelling cloud which CORRUPTS ALL YOUR BOONS AND has innate high-dps poison? on it as well has no telegraph, a wimpy fart cloud animation, and absolutely no indication of its actual AoE as it travels. And touching it once is enough to ruin your day. This attack should have a red circle, and the brightest, flashiest, most corrupted mass of yellow-purple out of them all. |
