Explanation: In the Late Roman Empire, Rome spent a good ~200 years slowly falling apart. Partly for this reason of weakness, and partly because of the diseased institutions and thinking which dominated the late Imperial government, the Empire would often invite barbarians into the Empire in order to fight other barbarians Rome let into the Empire; who were themselves invited into the Empire in order to fight other barbarians Rome let into the Empire, in order to fight other etc etc etc.

... it rarely worked out.
