It wasn't even one of those hinted at/fans may be reading into it type things. It was a huge part of her arc once she gave up on Xander.

I only watched the first season.

First season wasn't great and it definitely gets better. But once Angel gets his spinoff, his show was overall much better I thought.

Good to know should I watch Buffy before angel?

Angel leaves during an early Buffy season, and there's some overlap in shows, like characters moving between shows or events in one affecting the other, so it might be best to find a watch order list and following that to watch both at the same time.
