If you want to go down a deep rabbithole, talk to some older folks about Black hair. Malcolm X talks about needing to wash his head in a toilet when the lye solution he was using started burning his head. |

Even younger black folks have experienced stuff like that. My sister used to straighten her hair every few months because she didn’t like her ‘fro. Those chemicals are harsh and her hair would be so brittle just to get it straight. Luckily she doesn’t do that anymore, natural hair ftw. |

One member of the band Salt -N- Peppa used too many chemicals and lost the hair over her ears. Turned it into a fashion statement. But back in the day, there were huge controversies. Ebony and Jet magazines would be featuring folks with Afros on the covers, and advertising hair straighteners inside. James Brown called himself 'Soul Brother Number One' and had 'good' hair. |
