Little backstory here: I’m a 25F who moved into a 2006-built house about 6 months ago. It’s a normal-sized two-story home, and I live alone for the first time after years of having roommates.

Everything seemed fine before I bought the place, but during my first few nights here, I started hearing really loud creaking noises coming from random parts of the house. I couldn’t pinpoint where they were coming from. At first I brushed it off because the house isn’t even that old, but the noises kept getting worse at night.

I’m a night owl, so I usually stay up late watching shows until I fall asleep. One night about 3 months ago, I heard this insanely loud bang that sounded like it came from everywhere at once. The attic, the walls, maybe even underneath the house. It scared me so badly that I turned on every light in the house and FaceTimed my best friend because I didn’t want to be alone.

After that night, things went completely quiet for a while. Like... completely quiet.

Then about a week ago, I started hearing the creaking again.

At this point I was already freaked out, and I’d spend hours sitting in silence trying to figure out where the noises were coming from. But then something happened 2 nights ago that pushed me over the edge.

At around 2:37 AM, I woke up to the loudest scream I’ve ever heard in my life.

I’m not exaggerating when I say it sounded like it came from inside the house. I jumped out of bed, ran into the bathroom, locked the door, and called the cops. I stood there shaking for what felt like forever until they arrived.

Three cop cars showed up with their lights on but no sirens, which honestly made it feel even creepier. They searched the entire house and eventually found me hiding in the bathroom. Outside by one of the cruisers, they started questioning me, and I told them everything, the creaking, the banging, all of it.

Big mistake.

One of them ended up handing me a card for a mental health specialist.

I was honestly offended because I KNOW what I heard. This wasn’t a nightmare or some hallucination. I’ve never had mental health issues before, and I know the difference between anxiety and hearing an actual scream in my house.

The cops said there was no sign of forced entry and that they couldn’t do anything else for me. One of them even told me I should “try to get some sleep.”

How am I supposed to sleep after hearing that?

The weirdest part is that I couldn’t even tell if the scream was male or female. It was just... wrong. Loud enough that it felt like it came from every direction at once.

I asked the officers to stay for five minutes while I packed a bag, which thankfully they did. After that, I drove straight to my sister’s house, and I’ve been staying here ever since.

My sister is worried too and told me I can stay as long as I need, but I know I need to figure out what’s going on eventually.

I just don’t understand any of it.

What are the creaking noises?

What were those bangs?

And what the hell did I hear scream inside my house?

Reddit, could you help me understand what might be going on and how I should proceed safely?
