Explanation: Whether the Byzantine Empire, the remnant of the old imperial apparatus of the Roman Empire, counts as 'truly' Roman is a constant topic of dispute between Romaboos. The significant departure from Roman norms, institutions, and culture are all points constantly brought up - not to mention the fact that the Byzantines only occasionally controlled the fucking city of Rome.

... but even most anti-Byzie partisans like me respect Constantine XI, the last Emperor, anyway, for his heroic end when the Ottoman Turks came knocking at Byzantium's gates in 1453 AD. Rather than flee, something he easily could have done by ship, he fought to the last, supposedly crying out "Am I to be an Emperor without an Empire?", casting off his insignia of office, and dying in a futile final charge with his men, defending the city. His body was never identified. He died as a true Roman citizen, one soldier amongst many, side-by-side with his fellow citizens! 😭🙏
