To be fair shields were entirely plot driven in entire Star Trek. Well at least it was not as bad as in Stargate where in every single battle they were just looking on screens and waiting to do anything until they lost shields, engines, hyperdrive and weapons.

At least the Stargate ships' consoles didn't blow up in the face of the operator every time the ship was hit.

And they didn't need that dialog like, "Prepare to fire."

"For the record, I'm always prepared. I just have to press this button."

Lore being a modern day llm would make a good skit.

I mean yeah, but it's mostly just because their weapons were usually disabled in opening salvo of the enemy so there was no point.
