Every VPN app I've ever used shows a green checkmark when it's connected. None of them ever told me that my browser was leaking my actual IP address through WebRTC the entire time.

I found out by accident when I was testing a browser privacy checker before canceling a subscription. The tool flagged my real home IP as visible through a WebRTC STUN request even with the VPN active. That means every site I visited with WebRTC enabled could see exactly where I was.

Firefox has a simple fix. Type about:config in the address bar and set media.peerconnection.enabled to false. For Chrome, install the WebRTC Leak Prevent extension because Google doesn't offer a built in toggle for this.

What actually got to me was the math. I'd been paying roughly $120 a year for three years and the one thing I was paying to hide was available to anyone who bothered to check. The VPN was working at the tunnel level but my browser was undermining it on a completely different layer.
