I didn't hear much fanfare when it came out. I'm a sucker for the meta stuff when it comes to television and also when that is tied to some type of commentary about the world. The show uses the marginalization of Asian Americans in media with the fourth wall breaking tropes very effectively. I love when characters discover they're in a TV show but what I wasn't expecting was the twist where the main character actually leans into it to their advantage. One thing I would've appreciated was if it was slightly funnier. This got recommended as a comedy. It's somewhat funny but I wouldn't call it a straight comedy. I do think some of the places where it lags could've been handled better if it was a bit more of a fast paced comedy. Again there's times where it is. Jimmy Yang is very good in this and I think he should've gotten an Emmy nomination for it. Chloe Bennett is also very good and a nomination for her would've been nice as well. Ronny Chieng is probably the most interesting character here and his arc dovetails very nicely into the overarching themes about Asian American representation. The show deals very delicately with the stereotyping of Asian Americans and comes at it from multiple angles. I enjoyed the direction his storyline in particular took. There's an episode towards the end where it's basically a series of commercials. I was expecting it to be funnier but instead it was kinda deep. I thought a lot about that episode. There's so much this show is trying to say about the Asian image in western media and I appreciated it's ambition. That being said you don't have to be Chinese American or Asian American to enjoy this. I will say though that having a working knowledge of how Asian Americans have routinely been typecast will help you greatly. This should've gotten a ton of Emmy nominations. It's very smart, very thrilling at times, very heartfelt and insanely creative at times. It should've gotten nominations for Best Limited Series, Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting, Best Writing and Directing as well. I think you should check it out. Not a lot of people were talking about it when it came out. But I think it's genuinely a great piece of television that tackles the history of representation in a nuanced and innovative way. |
