Monk holds up way better than I expected and I think it’s because the show was always about grief, not crime

Going back through Season 1 lately and something kept nagging at me. The murders are almost beside the point. What the show is really tracking is a man four years into losing his wife, trying to reenter a world that has completely lost its shape for him.

His OCD predated Trudy’s death. The show is explicit about that. What the murder did was remove the one person who made his particular way of being in the world feel safe and manageable. Sharona isn’t just his assistant. She’s the scaffolding holding up what’s left of him.

I kept noticing how rarely the show lets him have a full win. He solves the case, yeah. But he doesn’t get on the elevator. He doesn’t shake the hand. The grief doesn’t lift. It just gets carried differently.

Anyone else gone back to this show as an adult and found it feeling very different from initial watch? Curious what others think made it work when so many procedurals from that era feel really dated now.
