I used to think my problem was that I was lazy or bad with money. Turns out, most of the time I wasn’t even craving delivery. I was just tired, hungry, and mentally done for the day. Then I’d open delivery apps “just to check,” scroll for 20 minutes, get annoyed by the fees, still order something average, and somehow spend $25–$35 on food I didn’t even enjoy that much. The thing that helped me was making an emergency dinner list when I was not hungry. Not a meal plan. Not a 40-ingredient Pinterest fantasy. Just a short list of meals that meet these rules: takes under 25 minutes Mine looks something like: Egg fried rice with whatever frozen veg I have The important part is that the list has to be made before the tired/hungry version of you takes over. Because hungry-you is not a rational financial planner. Hungry-you is a raccoon with Apple Pay. I also keep 3 “backup” ingredients around at all times: eggs, rice/noodles, and one frozen protein/veg option. That way I don’t need motivation. I just need to pick from the list. This has probably saved me more money than any budgeting app because it attacks the actual problem: decision fatigue. Don’t wait until 8:30pm to decide what kind of person you are. Decide earlier, write it down, and let tired-you follow the script. |
