European Countries could lose a large range of linear children's channels, as Paramount seeks to complete a merger with Warner Bros Discovery. The fate of the channels is currently unknown, with options to sell or close down entirely. Paramount hopes to avoid selling anything off, despite European reuglations. Bloomberg's Intelligence Analysist Jennifer Rei states Paramount could face Scrutiny from the European Commission "It is certainly likely that the commission will scrutinize overlaps between Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery in the wholesale supply of the children's television channels. Concerns would be raised if a combined market share exceeded 40% in any given country." EU merger rules allow a short window to ally potential merger concerns, if any are flagged during during the phase 1 concern. In this case, remedies would have to be filed by the start of July, the deadline being 7th July 2026, to give officials a chance to test them out during a brief extension period". "The commission could then clear the tie up or open a phase 2 probe, delaying a decision by three months, although a deadline could be extended." The UK Commission and Audience Authority is also to open an investigation following increasing pressure from public interest groups, industry insiders and unions. Channels that could be affected include: Nickelodeon Nick Jr. Nickelodeon Junior (French Feed) Nicktoons Nick Jr. Too (UK only) Cartoon Network Cartoonito Boomerang (UK, Italy and France) |
