disclaimer that Japan recovered the population of common minke whales back in the early 1970s(also not endangered today) for sustainable harvesting(0.1 precent of the population) before the save the whales movement got started, and I eat all sorts of animals so at this point I don't worry about one sustainably harvested animal over another. I've tried cooked whale before in japan but prefer this iteration. It was delicious, not too fatty or stringy deapite the marbling. |

Japan has no footing to make claims about cetacean sustainability and "harvesting." The Cove should be on loop on all of your screens until you start to grasp why I say this. |

As a highly sustainable country and culture, Japan has solid historical footing in animal conservation and harvesting. the cove is a well-told, one-sided story about a localized, brutal driving hunt of non-endangered dolphins that occurs annually in a single town. it's a completely different practice and scope. as with Japan actually saving the whales in real life before Save The Whales got popular, Japan has been winding down cetacean cuisine on its own for decades, the way popular horse and pigeon dishes naturally became less popular in the US over time. |

I'm sorry but whale just shouldn't be eaten under any circumstances. They're such intelligent creatures, I could never. |

That's a perfectly understandable point of view, I used to say the same thing. |

"one-sided" refers to a story being told from a single perspective. kid 1 tells the story of how a fight began, leaving out that they hit kid 2 first, for example. in this case, the taijiki dolphin hunt is an archaic, brutal, localized harvest and the doc focuses almost exclusively on the violence and creating an emotional connection between the audience and dolphins specifically, leaving out other animal harvests or the relatively small number of animals harvested this way. this does not make the documentary events false; it is a deliberately narrowly focused story told from a single perspective for maximum effect, and is extremely effective. |

Highly disappointed the mods censored my original response. I'm now suspicious this comment will even last. I guess that's how we live now. |

your original response is uncensored and still up. your second comment violated rule 2, so it was removed. |
