I have an SDR screen, on which I was trying to watch an HDR video with VLC media player, and it looked absolutely horrible. On the other hand, it looked just fine on both Windows and Ubuntu. Searching around, I found this discussion which says that it isn't built with libplacebo, and that one has to use the snap version to get HDR support. Why isn't it built with HDR support, when other software in the repos, like Dragon Player, does have it? Edit to add: I was using Ubuntu 22.04, looking at sources, later versions have removed libplacebo. Fedora removed it starting with version 39. The reason may be VLC 3.x not supporting libplacebo >5, but then why can't you provide that? |
