I fucking hate this implication. How evil to target mother's who lost a newborn and paint them as the purpotrator instead of the victim, like, this is really an evil and vile perspective. It suits /b/ 15 years ago, but shame on all you lemmings for upvoting. |

It helps to think of this place like a zoo, we come here to watch the silly monkeys, it doesn't mean we think they're right. |

No I'm pretty sure it's fine, there's a jokey disclaimer in the sidebar, I'm sure noone will see their own worst side reflected and feel it reinforced. Aren't we soooo funny. " |

Babies are just really fragile. That being said, the Netherlands reduced SIDS cases by a factor of 10 over other developed nations through a system of continuous education and support for parents in the months before and after birth. |

Babies are just really fragile. Current theories include a cut-off blood flow to their brain stem from turning their head, and honey acting as a paralyzing poison on them. That being said, the Netherlands reduced SIDS cases by a factor of 10 over other developed nations through a system of continuous education and support for parents in the months before and after birth.
I think they also gave every new family a safe place for the baby to sleep - a cardboard box. |

You're getting the Netherlands confused with a nordic country there. |

It's not fair to assume posting something means endorsing it even outside of this community. Plenty of people will post a Trump tweet or similar with the intention of criticizing it. Or they post a clearly ironic meme. Or they are sharing a personal story and want advice. Or they are just sharing news about current events. A post is just meant to draw attention to something interesting unless a community has more specific rules. |

The post title literally calls it a conspiracy. I read it as an implied criticism like most posts here are. |

Anon is insinuating that this is used as a cover-up or euphemism for mothers killing their infants intentionally, but that's only estimated to be 5% of cases at most, and those only because it couldn't be correctly determined as murder. The fact that it requires an autopsy first means presumably investigators try to find a better explanation before resorting to SIDS as a fallback. It does seem strange to have a catch-all condition for a pattern of unexplained deaths that have a lot of things in common, but it seems like it's generally due to infants being accidentally put in a situation where they suffocate or asphyxiate in their sleep. Some situations like sharing a bed or exposing them to tobacco smoke do sound like the parents deserve some responsibility for negligence however. Actually, I read further and it specifically says that it is a diagnosis of exclusion (meaning it's used as a default after failing to find a better diagnosis) and that suffocation and neglect can qualify. |

No way, man. Without a return to the norm, this place loses its luster. Itâs easy to lose yourself to the weird, if you donât have the voice of reason. I call on the normal people to stay. |

Listen dude we all know the stuff written in this posts is by barely human freaks. It's shocking to all of us. It just doesn't cause us to fly off the handle and wish death on yet-to-be-born babies. |

It doesnât cause most of us to fly off the handle* As the person who has probably posted the second most in this community, I do so while recognizing that a neurodiverse crowd like lemmy needs that slice of ginger |

Yeah to be honest I'm not so bothered by the post, I'm interested in a "know thy enemy" sort of way. I'm bothered by people getting mad with people clapping back at critical responses to the post. Like obviously people are critical of it, look at it FFS. |

Cool so let's call a spade a spade. Replying "you're doing it wrong" to people naturally pissed at the existence of these fuck wits is daft. Wanting to critically engage with noxious ideas isn't "fragile". Pushing critics out of your safe space is. |

But the parent comment here is attacking lemmings, thatâs where the âyouâre doing it wrongâ is coming from, not the, âthis is awfulâ part. |

Just FYI, neonaticide is a thing. Childbirth is hard and traumatizing and sometimes it leads to mother not being able to take it anymore. But, as another fellow lemmitor pointed out below, it indeed accounts for a small percentage of SIDS |

What's specifically asinine about it? Are you implying that bringing it up could've been better if it'd happened more often? I have just made you aware that this is, however sad, a thing that happens and people can talk about it. While I too disagree with the opinion in the OP post, you're very much advised to not try and moral police this sub, because cringe and weird takes would appear here on a regular basis and you'll be quite frequently offended to the core if you take it all close to the heart. Please don't take it out on the strangers on the Internet. |

Maybe SIDS was invented to give grieving parents who accidentally suffocated their baby when sleeping next to them a diagnosis that isnât just: "Yeah well you just killed your baby with your negligence." |

Oh you are right, that's Finland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maternity_package
@Doxin@pawb.social , while it's likely a confusion, in the NL, many places do offer maternity packages. Usually it's hospitals or municipalities doing so. You can also buy them yourself, and some health insurances reimburse them. They usually contain birth pads (like period packs but they can catch wayyyy more blood and are comfier), a mat, wipes, and so on. |

I know, but the box-to-sleep-in is a fairly famous thing which afaik we don't do. |
