IIRC, the reason The Simpsons is in Springfield was becsuse every state in the US has a city of that name and they didn't want the family to be from any specific state.

You're right about the producers not wanting it to be in any specific state, but there is no city or town name that exists in every state. There's only a Springfield in 34 states, but it's one of the most common names.
