Journalism standards. Whenever you have something bad to say about someone, they're afforded the opportunity to say something about it, even if that's "no comment" or declining to comment. It also conveys the current state of the case, which is that they're fighting it.

I understand it being included in the article. But OP only quoting that part outside of the link seems to be putting a spin on it.

The UI might be different between our home servers. OP copied and pasted the subtext under the title when you click through to the article. On Lemmy.world, it does that automatically, but maybe not on piefed.world.
