In 1986, Al Lewis opened Grampa's, a restaurant where the public was provided with a collective brush with fame. Admirers could see Al Lewis up close and in person - with perfect reception. "Al Lewis in the Flesh" observes the American pastime of celebrity adulation, revealing a man to whom performing is second nature. Filmed in 1991 - 1992 and completed in 1993, this film was my senior documentary thesis film at SUNY Purchase in New York.

You'll like this random message I dug up...

True thing: I lived just above a fish shop directly across Bleecker Street from his restaurant, and he was nearly always outside the door, on a stool smoking a cigar. On warm days with the window open, I heard "It's Grandpa!" or, "Holy fucking shit, it's Grandpa Munster!" from tourists at least four times a day. He was delightfully cranky to them, really crabby, but some went in to eat anyway. He was such a constant, sitting there outside my window like a piece of street furniture. It was cool when I had people over, sparking a joint, and saying, "The bathrooms's over there if you need it, and Grandpa Munster is over there if you're interested." It never failed to impress, ha.
