idk, but who cares? Just ignore them all and go for indie titles. I had way more fun with FTL and Noita than RDR2, etc.

Western game bad when unfuckable player character, or characters above the age of 18.

What does "fail" even mean? I do have a great distaste for "AAA" titles roughly post-Skyrim, but AFAIK most AAA games succeed financially. Even Fallout76, widely regarded as a flop in terms of critical reception and player sentiment, performed reasonably well, even if not quite as well as previous Fallout titles.

there have been a pretty large number of live service disasters in recent memory. from CA's Hyenas being so terrible that it got shelved after a playtest, to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (blech) crashing out within a year, to Concord getting pulled off the Sony store within months, to most recently Highguard lasting a mere 45 days... and that's just what I can remember off the top of my head. Every single one of those games was a flop, with Concord famously losing Sony millions of dollars.

all this amidst a sea of studio layoffs happening year over year, I think it's fair to say that the western AAA scene is currently floundering.

Fallout 2 is just the framing for the meme, its very much not about fallout 2.

I love FTL, but weird choice for an unfun AAA game, as RDR2 is actually one of the best AAA games in "recent" history.

Fallout 2 slaps. One of my biggest annoyances of corporate game dev shenanigans is that we can't have an enhanced edition for android.

RDR2 was great narrative. Combined with a Westworld-like + GTA sandbox, it was super fun and immersive. Rare for a game regardless of its budget.

Mainly management issues. Time constraint. See, some games, like those successfull indie games, are passion projects. Often forged by one mind.

Big companies hire people for a project. You see an issue with gameplay? Too bad youre just the designer, no one wants to hear your opinion. You lose passion, if you had any to begin with. Then companies tend to see workers as slaves. Bend the knee or else. Id not go the extra mile for benefits barely matching the lawful minimum. The new avengers show will drop nxt year? Gotta ship a product which normally needs years of development. You cut features to meet deadlines. Sometimes this is also because management thinks only pressure makes people work at all.

No, I don't think I do. The goal of their message is to point out that the modern AAA game industry makes similar, boring and repetitive games. RDR2 isn't that, it's a genuine piece of art. Why pick the one good apple from a pile of bad apples, when complaining about the aforementioned pile of mostly bad apples.

Because there were plenty of great games released. You and other terminally online gamers, just ignore them and want to bitch. Time is a flat circle.

Did you mean to reply to another comment? It's like, completely unrelated to what I said, I was praising a game, not bitching. Nor did I say anything to indicate that I'm terminally online or a gamer.

I don't think it's fair to lump live service games in with all AAA games, that's its own very specific kind of failure and a lot easier to explain with greed and shit management at the helm.

Look at other recent AAA failures and it's a very different story, though still ultimately failure.

  • Skull and Bones
  • Marathon
  • Redfall
  • Highguard
  • Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
  • Saint's Row (2022)
  • Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Star Wars Outlaws
  • Marvel's Avengers

Rdr2 also released 8 years ago, so not really current. I would use Kingdom Come 2 as example but I dont know if it qualifies as AAA instead of AA

Pains me to see Marathon on this list. The game is so good in so many ways. Gun play, world building, narrative, characters. The quality is truly there. Their problem was that they made the wrong genre. Why they would spend so much time and money on an extraction shooter is beyond me.

Honestly watching a let's play of Gollum was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a long time. Like 10 hours of laughs. I'm not even sure if it counts as bad anymore if you categorise it as a comedy game

Because extraction shooters make money.

Well, some extraction shooters.

Ok, actually a very tiny fraction of extraction shooters make money.

But we can totally tempt people away from it, and make all that money for ourselves!

devs? yeah, no.

Yeah, the devs are desperately trying to make whatever they can with the limited time and suffocatingly safe direction they're given by the executive suite, who know that the game will give a much faster return on their investment than a well-made game given the time and freedom it needs to flourish. Game companies don't exist to make games, they exist to make money; they've long since figured out that bad games made quickly make better money than good games made slowly. If they could sell empty boxes for more money, they would.

I really don't want to consider Outlaws a flop even though i know the studios do. I played it (public library copy) a year after release and it was plenty fun. I'd probably pay $15 for it.

TLOU2 had a good story. Aloy doesn't look like a goblin. Kratos reflecting on his past is good character development.

Meanwhile, your gacha waifu just had her panties censored in the latest update.

But other than that I enjoyed it

I mean, it really is as simple as you'd think it is.

They're entitled, vain, and incompetent.

Gigantocorporate structures... do that to themselves and their constituents.

They have a whole other kind of 'social norms', just like any particularly culturally different group or economic class of people have noticably different expectations and behavior patterns.

The corporation values ass kissing and gaslighting more than anything else, it takes an extreme and constant, consistent effort inside the company to make that not happen, like pushing a boulder up a hill.

You can place varying degrees of blame on management or devs, on specifically full of themselves and insufferable people...

... but the ultimate reason this happens is because shareholders say line must go up, and the social dynamics that occur in an organization that is rabidly aiming for that goal... produce narcissists that are full of themselves.

Because a mass shakeup, an attempt to reset that via resetting people... well that means downtime, that means 'a rebuilding year'... but that line needs to keep going up NOW. And firing all your top leadership is a near guaranteed way to tank your stock value.

So, the most influential people with the most wrongheaded ideas fail upward, untill the money printer breaks, and then, at that point... shareholders are okay with firing leadership, because the bad thing, the line go down, that already happened.

And to be fair to 76, it genuinely is a good MMO-style game now, IMO. It'll never be at the level of FNV/FO4/Skyrim as far as community sentiment goes, since you can't mod the shit out of it, but compared to launch when I finally went back to it last year, I put enough time into it again to feel like I got my money's worth.

I think the fundamental issue is that people who like FO4 or Skyrim typically don't want to play an MMORPG in the first place. But maybe I'm extrapolating too much from myself.

no, that's exactly it: the entire franchise is built on being fundamentally a single player game and highly customizable.

players, reasonably, expect that from the series.

also, God Emperor Todd^TM^ promised you would never have to see another player if you didn't want to...which - and you will never guess this - was a complete and utter lie.

so on top of going against the established series formula players were also lied to about the game being playable without the MMO aspect.

the FO76 launch really was a legendary shitshow...
