Firstly, this is my dads' story, not mine. I also do not believe in anything like this at all, but he genuinely is uncomfortable telling this story.

So he was driving home one night on a rural country road, not so rural that there is never anybody on it, but forest, no lights, pitch black etc. this is in late 80s/early 90s.

So it's completely dark and suddenly a black, shadowy figure is illuminated by the headlights. This appears too suddenly and he hits the figure. He describes this as actually hitting something, like a thud.

Where it gets really weird is this figure ends up in the passenger seat. My dad describes being utterly paralysed by fear. The window shield wasn't damaged at all whatsoever, but this figure had ended up beside him. My dad (who was probably 18-20) said he was far too scared to look at it but could see it out of his peripheral vision and because he was only a few minutes from home, he just stepped on it to get there ASAP.

On arrival, he immediately just booked it from the car, yet once he got to the front door, he turned back to look. No figure, no damage to the car, no damage to windshield. He was home alone that night and had to drive to a hotel because he was too scared to stay that night.

His mum and brother also have seen something similar in a similar location, but nothing like my dad.

My dad is also someone who doesn't believe in anything like this at all, he wouldn't make it up. He doesn't believe in the paranormal now, but he doesn't know what to make of what happened.

Has anyone heard of anything similar to this? Experienced anything similar to this?
