I've had an idea to write something.

Is this a natural consequence of me having read an ungodly number of words in past week? Perchance. Likely, even. Yet, that matters not, surely.

Anyway, I'm not sure I'll actually act on this urge to write, but I am strongly considering it. If for no other reason than to simply get it out of my system, I'll probably write something, but as per usual with these literary paroxysms, I'm likely to drop it soon after I type the first word.

In other news: nothing of note.

I wore my black trousers, today. Long time no black trousers!

Write on what? Paper with pen? Typewriter/word processor? Or the computer? For the latter, I find a lot of people are content training Google Gemini by using Google Docs. Meanwhile, Notepad (Windows) and TextEdit (Mac) are right there, and text files take like no space at all.

I use a service similar to Google Docs. I'm not trying to advertise for them, but I like all their themes (and will change the theme while writing if it doesn't meet my needs), that it's free and private, and they have a way to pay that is both a subscription and a purchase. So you can pay $100 to get the pro features forever, or you can pay $60 a year twice and then you own it. Or, you can pay $6 a month for 2 years and then you own it. I don't pay but I'm strongly considering it because I think it's awesome to do it like that. They don't have apps yet, which is kinda dodgy, especially since they're getting paid now (by others, I mean), but web apps are better than people think. So I do have it on my iPhone's home screen and it works like an app, but it uses Safari and it hides the web controls. Android can do the same, just go share, add to home screen. Windows recently added it (you pin a site to Taskbar), and of course Macs can do it as well.

I used to want to write, but I never really got into it like that. My wife wrote a lot of fan fiction, but has pivoted to crochet. She makes things. I'm more of a consumer. I'd rather read than write.

It's just so hot... Since they're much thinner than my usual weekend jeans, I went with the black trousers, this time.

Well, I am curious to know what this service is!

That being said, I do prefer to write local. Probably Obsidian or something, maybe just straight up LibreOffice Writer. Doesn't really matter, I reckon.

Well, I don't know what I'd rather do... But it's fun to experiment, at least! I certainly love reading, but it's also fun to get your loose imagination into something more concrete, I feel. Well, that's me, anyway. Cool that your wife wrote FF :D Crochet is awesome as well.

Ellipsus. Not a typo, they chose to not spell it the same as "...". I don't really like advertising services if I can help it... though, it's a bit hypocritical as I post about games and tech. Apple and Xbox and Windows and shit like that. But, most people have opinions on those already. I just don't wanna be anybody's billboard.

I looked into Obsidian once. $5 a month in perpetuity to sync notes across devices. The issue is, this can be done within third party frameworks at no cost to them. My emulator uses Google Drive — I can uninstall it, reinstall it (no games, no saves), sign back into Google, and all my games and progress is restored. I pay for 200GB of iCloud and notes take up next to no space. Though, I do get they need to get paid. That's why I like the "we're gonna charge a monthly fee BUT after 24 payments you stop paying and you own it" model. If more people did that, it would make subscriptions a lot more popular or at least palatable.

Hey yeah, I get that about not wanting to advertise. Then again, one thing is advertising, another thing is suggesting something, giving a recommendation. Recommendations are important! I think they're great, actually; necessary. More and more, I think that algorithms drive the way we discover things, which means we're at the mercy of what cold logic decides we should see. I think it's great when a human earnestly recommends something, with other people in mind.

And... Yeah, I'm definitely not spending a cent on any of this. Not on Ellipsus, not on Obsidian... If I want to sync across devices, I'll just use Syncthing.

I do get that developers want to get paid, but I'm quite firmly against spending money on software. I'm not gonna get into it too much, but there's so much open source, free stuff out there that I just don't see the point in paying for any of this cloud stuff, to be honest.
