Japan's Sumo vs America's Sumo: They're Not Even the Same Sport - from SumoSpirit

Video Link (22:31)

I don't know if this video will help too many people, as this is a small community and all the regulars seem much more experienced than myself, but as a sumo newb, this video has helped me better understand some fundamentals and to better understand why I've been enjoying watching sumo moreso than I do many US sports.

By comparing aspects of sumo in Japan vs the US, it showcases a lot of how Japanese sumo is more than just a sporting event. It's something the wrestlers make their entire lives, and for the fans it's more than just an event but a living bit of the past of their country.

It covers basics of sumo life, rank, the meanings behind the ring and the clothing, and more, and how while the US version has much of the same athleticism, having all the culture stripped from it made it more plain for me to see what makes the rest of the events and ceremony important to traditional sumo fans.

From watching the Paris event and a few of the multi-hour tournament videos, I've really begun to appreciate all the things that are going on other than the actual match itself. For anyone else new or interested in sumo, this feels like a great place to start.

I'm glad to see there is an avenue for women and non-Japanese to be able to participate freely in sumo, but it also helps me understand why it's so important for a lot of people to keep sumo largely the way it is. Some of the exclusivity was bothering me as it seemed unfair, and there are still some things that probably could or should be changed, but at least I now better know why it is how it is now.

Otherwise, I'm pumped for the upcoming July tournament, and I hope Wakatakakage is able to recover from his injury. That sounds like a very scary condition and must be heartbreaking right after doing so well in May.
