What is the best mailbox overall?

Privacy/encryption is a top priority

Large Gmail archive needs migrating over. If possible, I'd need to receive emails sent to my Gmail account (even if I can't answer them from that Google email adress).

I recently switched from Gmail to Proton but I'm already looking to switch again.

I just want a mailbox that's safe and nice. Much like Ente really. I tried Tuta because they are "friends" but I only saw negative feedback...

EDIT: I choose mailbox.org!

Well as a Tuta user I can't say anything bad about it. It works for me. Additionally I have an account at Murena which also works very well.

What is the complaint about Proton? I feel like they went out of their way to make the transition from Google as seamless as possible.

As others have said, tuta. Could also use PGP, but that doesn't hide the sender/receiver only the content

You can add your GPG keys to the thundermail client, and it just sits there locally on your computer encrypting/decrypting mail as needed. Another caveat/weakness with PGP/GPG is it relies on the sender to actually encrypt their email with your key. If they don't, of course the email will sit there in plain text.

No need to apologize! Of course I will believe you, an anonymous internet account discouraging use of a well-audited privacy service.

They don't support Rump.
During his first term, Protons president said one specific thing Rump did isn't automatically terrible for everyone, it may help Proton and other small online providers. And he was right at the time. That's as close as anyone at Proton ever got to saying anything nice about Rump.

Proton realy is the best you'll find out there. None of the others are very close yet.

It's so weird how any time someone mentions Signal, Proton, or other convenient privacy-focused alternatives to big tech someone on Lemmy will magically appear to say "No, don't!"

I gave it a try.

Impossible to buy a coupon without registration. Registered, then the coupon amount was instead billed to the account I had only registered to be able to gift Tuta to a friend, despite the form saying I was buying a coupon. Support took 3 or 4 days to get back to me with a refund.

Turns out buying coupons is really only supported by third party sellers (linked nowhere on the site).
Oh, and several instructions on the FAQ site were wrong, and notifications in the app did not work properly (on different devices).

This was 2 or 3 months ago. Overall, it seems more like a startup then what I'd consider a reliable service provider.

That's untrue: they said far more. It's really strange to me how Proton defenders never show you their official statement. Here is one (emphasis mine):

Here is our official response, also available on the Mastodon post in the screenshot:

Corporate capture of Dems is real. In 2022, we campaigned extensively in the US for anti-trust legislation.

Two bills were ready, with bipartisan support. Chuck Schumer (who coincidently has two daughters working as big tech lobbyists) refused to bring the bills for a vote.

At a 2024 event covering antitrust remedies, out of all the invited senators, just a single one showed up - JD Vance.

By working on the front lines of many policy issues, we have seen the shift between Dems and Republicans over the past decade first hand.

Dems had a choice between the progressive wing (Bernie Sanders, etc), versus corporate Dems, but in the end money won and constituents lost.

Until corporate Dems are thrown out, the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.

That's because on competing platforms like Reddit, this criticism is censored while the latest Proton company line (from their official accounts) is given preference.

If you want to see some real AstroTurf in action, check out the official Proton deferral to a completely anonymous and poorly written Medium post.

All that about the dems being captured by corporate interests is true. Had been true for a few decades since Clinton won.

None of it equates to supporting Rump.

The cope is the most important part. They aren't criticizing Democrats in a vacuum, they're doing it to say JD Vance, the Trump administration, and (in the post that sparked this) Donald Trump and his corporate captured Republican judge are all good.

In the increasingly slim chance you aren't just pretending to be ignorant, the official Proton statement makes it clear that all Republicans are the better option, so yes this is praise of Vance.

At the time the Republicans were making some noise about holding big tech accountable. Proton thought they may have ment it. But then big tech made the right donations and all that fell apart.

Nothing anyone at Proton has ever said, has indicated general support for Republicans or Rump.

This. Sooo many internet smoothbrains saw this as if Proton put on a MAGA hat and stormed the capital. They said one pragmatic thing, given the current circumstances at the time.

Yes they have. In fact if you read the other section I bolded for you:

the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.

As a bonus, here is Andy Yen praising Donald Trump for appointing a corporate-captured Republican judge

And at the time, several years ago, that was true.
Again, nothing any of them have said, in any way, is any kind of general endorsement of Republicans or Rump.

It was never true, despite your historical revisionism.

I just linked the original post of Proton CEO Andy Yen praising Donald Trump for you too.

And again, (how many times now) he praised a specific action. And at the time the Republicans and Rump were making noise about going after big tech. That's not revising anything. For a good month or so, it looked like they might actually do it, to at least some limited degree. Far more than the Democrats anyway.

If you actually believed this after four years of the Trump presidency, you are either extremely gullible or dishonest in your framing.

And yes, praising the actions of Trump and his admin is equivalent to praising the entities themselves. Don't be obtuse.

On no! Not at all! Today it's absolutely clear Rump was soliciting bribes donations from the big tech players.

And you're still over stating it. He praised an action, not actions.
Hell, I'm the guy who keeps calling him Rump, and even I can say he did the right thing getting rid of the Penny. That was long over due.

What part of "the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses" sounds like the praise of just one thing and not a blanket endorsement

Seriously?
I get that we spend a lot of time online, but the world has much much more in it than big tech. There are at least hundreds of other things out there.

Yes, in the context of him selling a tech product and in the context of him having nothing else to say about Trump, Vance, and the Republican establishment, his praise is clear.

Focusing on corporate Dems, ignoring appointees like Lina Khan, and requiring them to change, was the only condition in the original statement. Which is ironic because now that you admit Republicans are bad (and I repeat, everybody knew this back then, just read the comments), Dems have gotten worse overall so his statement still remains.

Let me try to rephrase your argument here:
In the context of ignoring literaly everything else in the world, praising this one thing, is literally praising everything Rump does.
You see how that doesn't really work?
