Are Americas closer to Antarctica than Australia? Why don't they go there from South America instead of New Zealand? |

This map explains why there can be a 24-hour sun in Antarctica and why direct flights between the US and Europe pass over South America. Checkmate, Globers! |

On a similar vein, this is why I like the Dymaxion map so much; it shows more clearly how the landmasses are connected and better illustrates how early people migrated and settled where they did. |

That's the wrong way round! Need one with the North Pole at the center, then Antarctica is properly shown as the ice wall it is!

This looks like my favourite projection: But with Antarctica in the centre! It tessalates really nicely which is fun
But you can see the deformation is madness, and only really works if you put sea in the middle of each side

Are Americas closer to Antarctica than Australia? Why don't they go there from South America instead of New Zealand?
Antarctica is divided up into a whole bunch of wedge-shaped territories managed by different countries (plus an international treaty where everyone agreed to only use it for scientific purposes), and most research stations are near the coast. The Chilean, Argentinian, and British areas are in that area near South America. For the rest, starting in South America would mean you'd have to cross a big chunk or even all of Antarctica to get where you want to be |

The Pacific Ocean is really big.
This always made me wonder, and I might be a stupid question, but I know Pangea was this one huge mass at one point. Was there nothing on the other side of the world except water? Why did all the land form on one side of the globe? |

Correct. Nothing but water. Pangea wasn’t the only supercontinent in Eath’s history, just the latest. |

Huh. Makes sense, I guess. I wonder if the continents just switch sides every however often and they’re just in the process of migrating together again but on the opposite side this time 🤔 I should go to bed lol |

The deformation is mostly located in the sea and shouldn't matter. Meaning it is pretty correct when it comes to landmass sizes. |

We have opted instead for an infinite plane with ice islands. You can see some islands are duplicates, with corresponding dupe NPCs, but we can promise each visit will be unique! Please enjoy our world :-) |

Shouldn’t matter to us! But in my experience whales find these maps completely inscrutable. Afaik they actually prefer a Mercator centred on the Pacific, but any whales feel free to chime in |
