It's weird they showed the dude's picture, if anything. But it's about the context of how the media covers women.

Why is it weird that they showed his picture? He jumped out of the plane and died

They respected her wishes to not show her.

This isn’t about gender?

The meme itself is funny in an absurd way, but I really hope it’s not being taken seriously lmao

Two main characters.

One didn’t want their picture shown which is why it isn’t…

Why are you assuming anyone's picture should be shown? This isn't a book cover, the guy committed suicide.

There are no less than 5 references to her gender in the first tweet. Not disagreeing with you, but it's difficult to miss that the pilot was a woman.

Its difficult to miss it in the tweet. Its easy to miss it in the articles. In my quick glance, none of the headlines contained any gender information. Some ran the story before identifying the student. The CNN article, the one I read in its entirity, referred to the student by name once, and did not refer to her with pronouns, but referred to the pilot he/him pronouns twice.

The media framed this story around a man's suicide, rather than a story of a woman's unexpected solo flight. Both would be valid ways to tell the story, but its telling the publishers all went with the man's story version.

You’re right it’s two pictures taken out of context, it was your text that asserted it’s from an article and this is a comment from it. My mistake entirely.

It’s a funny meme given the absurdity of it.

The original also mentioned how the new woman pilot didn't damage the plane when she landed. Which is important when your instructor jumps out and leaves you in the plane. Although also important to note that the new pilot had already flown many times during training and was just getting hours so why point out that she didn't damage the plane during landing.

If you took even a second to look around our community, you’d see that we quite like men in general.

Just not men like you who make assumptions and leave sexist comments.

I feel like that would be worth mentioning if it were her first time landing a plane. But it wasn't.

Yes!

They're always so shocked when they call us names and we react negatively.

I like men quite a lot. I don't like these types of men who force themselves on women.

Their pronouns and placed at expected locations in the sentence. Hence I didn't read them. I am a weird one when it comes to that. You really need to point that out explicitly if you want me to get that. Edit: also paying attention to tbe gender of pronouns in German is somewhat pointless since words can influence the Grammatic gender anyway. There is no they them after all.

Isn't it fortunate that the tweet was in English with a screen snapshot that was in English? Or was "LOL GERMAN" your goalpost moving?

Landing a plane while in shock is no simple feat

Doing anything while in shock is no simple feat. It's almost as if militaries have entire multi-week to multi-month long training procedures to work around that … that are still largely ineffective on first contact.

This reminded me of another story of someone managing to land a plane. This poor lady’s husband had a heart attack, and she had to have people teach her over the radio how to land it. It was running out of fuel. There is audio on youtube. I am so impressed by her. I can’t even imagine keeping it together if my partner had just died and I was in a plane I had no idea how to operate.

No, but being a german I might perceive gendered pronouns differently compared to native Brits.

Oh, look! It is equally clear here that the student was a woman and the instructor was a man! It seems that you can't really hide behind German as an excuse, can you? Or did I mistranslate this badly? (I'm a bit rusty in German.)

Here is a little bit of a tip: if your grasp of a language is weak, perhaps you shouldn't comment on the clarity of speech of a native speaker of said language. It really isn't a good look. It's pretty much why I won't correct or criticize the grammar of French or Mandarin speakers because, well, my command of these is not strong enough to be certain.

Standard journalism etiquette is to humanize stories so the reader can connect more easily.

It's one of the reasons local news channels interview random people for quotes, or why they pull random twitter posts to include from people for random commentary about something.

Also not sure how you never noticed that almost every story about someone dying in an unusual way includes their photo. That's basically standard regardless of the situation or genders.

I've noticed the opposite, that suicide often doesn't include photos of the deceased. That's in following journalistic guidelines where I live.

You clearly didn't read what I wrote with enough attention to detail.

I did not argue that the bit of text didn't have the information, but that it was encoded only in pronouns and not subject of the post. And encoding gender in pronouns does not work in German. If you had used the correct translation for student which is Student it would have been less clear. Coed (Student with female pronouns) is the word for Studentin. You wouldn't translate Bäckerin as bakress, I sincerely hope.

May I politely ask why this has become a topic of conversation here? There's nothing in German in the post, no one is speaking German in the comments - why would the post have to cater to the way you read pronouns in German?

It doesn't. And I have no idea why they argue that way. I just said that I didn't read the pronouns as being gender specific. This might be to do with my nationality and hence warped perception of language.

I just said that I didn't read it as being gendered at first. And get attacked for it.

I have to admit I was a little confused when you first replied to me as well. Probably just a language barrier thing.

What I tried to say was that you don't need to read the pronouns in the post to understand the meaning. Hence I didn't. I don't know how to explain this in plain English.

This is a post in a women's group about a common trope that the media engages in when they're covering a story about women. We don't actually need men to mansplain this to us.

I know I'm late to all this but I actually enjoyed learning that they withheld her picture because she requested it. I was over here sharpening the pitchfork and it was a relief to not need to light the torch.

The way it was presented I was like, "yeah! it's always this way!" But with a dab of context I'm like, "Yeah! Good point! Glad they didn't ignore her wishes anyway!"

Yeah if they had stated that fact on it's own and if it hadn't come from a condescending man, the fact itself would be welcome here! I was also relieved to know she had requested to not have her picture shown.

It is still odd to me that they pictured the man in the story since suicides are often not reported on anyway. And I enjoy getting into the nitty gritty of respectfully talking about these topics with other women!

It is, but I'm not sure that this is the best example of the new parts. Newspapers were running photos of people long before you or I were born, and drawings as early as 1806. Even absent a profit-driven late capitalist hellscape, a lot of people feel validated by attention.
