In my experience the guy would have had 6 different managers in those 6 years and endured 24 (6yr x 4q) rounds of layoffs. The promotion will be title and responsibility only with the cost of living outpacing any sort of raise. Oh, and yeah... we're gonna need you to come into the office for that fifth day too and pay for parking/transportation.

In order to actually move up during that 6 years you would have had to change jobs twice.

I think the wildest implication is that you're supposed to balk at the raise and yearn for the promotion.

Like, no, I want more money, not more work, thanks.

As much as this is LI garbage and probably LLM slop...

I think it's probably right: from the other side. Shitty management are going to give the raises, promotions and benefits to those who are sucking at their teats of in-office work.

Don't worry. Promotions, raises and benefits won't be going to those in office 4 days a week. It'll mostly be nepotism

WFH is a deal breaking benefit for me. I haven't had to commute for 6 years, it's fucking great.

Well, until you become a manager and get to do nothing like them.

I actually hated work from home and my productivity dropped like a rock. Doesnt matter anymore though, the small company was bought by private equity who immediately merged it with a foreign company and started cramming AI into every nook and cranny.

I'm scraping by on cleaning carpets and air ducts now... sure it barely pays a fraction of a software dev salary but I no longer dread having to log in and feign enthusiasm in morning standup meetings anymore :)

People mention small details like fingers or letters to detect slop, but my method is to look at faces and I'll know instantly that it is slop. It always has that soulless style.

Same here. Full time WFH since St Patrick's Day 2020. I've been to the office less than 10 times since. I've not worked a full day there once, if I do go, I travel on company time.

I used to drive 16,000 miles a year, now it's more like 4,000.

I especially love

Because you finally understood that visibility is not about the work.

Translation: Nobody cares how well your work is done. Being there and looking busy is way more important than the actual benefits you bring to your employer.

All I'm reading is

  • WFH makes workers incredibly productive and happy
  • middle managers are unable to make objective decisions about raises and promotions and just go off of vibes
  • to resolve point 2, linkedin lunatics think the most reasonable solution is to remove the working conditions that lead to employee satisfaction and extreme productivity rather than recognize the ineptitude of middle management

Yeah the solution to this problem is "remote first" which to speak the language, also saves a bunch of money on middle managers who lack the object permanence to realise work gets done when they aren't looking

Kinda same when working in IT.

If everything works as expected, people ask "why do I even pay you?"

If somethings wrong, people also ask "why do I even pay you?"

Let others have the promotions. So long as I get to be 100% remote, who cares if you get some fancy title and a pittance for a raise. Not driving, not wearing suits, having my dog next to me all day, having my own bathroom, not buying lunch everyday, and especially not having to make forced smalltalk with people.

What a load of crock. Hilariously this worked the opposite way for me. Was working in a medium sized business as the only tech support person. Boss was constantly asking "what do you do all day?" because I'd miss one thing on his task list, even though I was supporting the whole company. Got missed for promotions because "You don't come say hi to the whole office in the morning."

Moved to a fully remote job, started popping up more on the radars of execs because suddenly if they want people to show up to their weird little culture events they have to invite people to them on calendar events, and I can join them since I'm remote and can do my work at the same time as having it up on another monitor. They see my name and face everywhere and start associating me with someone who "shows up to the conversations". I'm remote, do less work faster and happier, and am already interviewing for promotions.

And bonus I can just ignore people's shitty social games, or wait to react to questions or requests until I've had time to think them through, instead of someone walking up to my desk in the middle of an outage and interpreting my stress as unfriendliness.

Inept middle managers are the only true LinkedIn Lunatics. The people doing the real insane posting are just trying to sell to the boring posters who are trying to sell to inept middle management.

So tldr your job performance doesn't matter in getting the promotion, it's all about sucking up to your boss like a corporate groveling worm.
