This happened earlier today and my heart rate has only just returned to normal. I work as an IT project consultant, and for the past two weeks, my team has been preparing a major system demo for a high-priority client. We had a external vendor on the line who was supposed to manage the backend server during the live walkthrough. About twenty minutes into the presentation, the system started lagging severely, causing error codes to pop up right on screen in front of eight client executives. Naturally, I tried to stay calm and talk through the slide deck while messaging the vendor privately in our side chat. He started pushing back, blaming our network instead of fixing his application service. I got frustrated because we had tested the exact bandwidth an hour before. To handle it quickly, I decided to unmute on our internal vendor call and address him directly. I hit what I thought was the mute button on the main meeting software, swapped windows, and proceeded to give him a firm, unfiltered piece of my mind about his team's lack of preparation and how he was ruining our presentation. I was completely professional with my language, but my tone was sharp and very direct. After a glorious 40-second rant, I paused, expecting him to respond. Instead, total silence. Then I heard a quiet voice from the main call room speaker: "...Ian, we can still hear you." It turned out I had hit the unmute button on the main presentation window instead of muting it. All eight client stakeholders, my own project directors, and the entire team sat through my loud, passionate callout in real time. To make matters worse, the whole session was being recorded for their executive board. The room was dead silent for three seconds before the client director let out a soft laugh and said, "Well, at least we know you're fighting for our project speed." I wanted the earth to swallow me whole. The vendor fixed the issue within two minutes, but I spent the rest of the call sweating through my shirt trying to wrap up gracefully. My boss sent me a message right after saying we need to "have a chat" tomorrow morning. TL;DR: I tried to mute myself on a major client presentation to chew out a third-party vendor for breaking our system demo, but I accidentally unmuted instead, broadcasting my entire angry rant to eight executive clients on a recorded call. |
